i need help backing up my hd

Hi all I am sending my comp into be fixed and they will format my drive so basically i need to backup my things all i really want saved is my winmx folder, which is my mp3's movies etc.... and my deus ex saved games. All i have for backup is a cd burner, i could really use that dvd burner right about now my winmx folder is very large, 20 gig (lots o porn :o) plus i got lord of the rings in it.
so it is very important to me. is there an easy way to backup this folder? i have winzip.
For my second question how do i backup my dues ex saved games? these are sooo imortant to me i cant even explain i am master with pistols and i have put many hours into it. any suggestions?

If you go into your Deus Ex folder, there should be a "Save" sub-folder. Just pack the entire folder up, then when you're ready un-pack it into the same spot. Should work fine.
BTW, go in and delete any saved games you don't want, just to save space. I have MANY temporary saves just because I wanted to put my game on hold and see what would happen if I did something really stupid. After activating the cheat codes, the temptation to do stupid things gets even greater. I think I enjoy summoning 250 dobermans, but I really don't know why.

lol thanks dmoltrup i also have multiple saves usually before I think i might have to make a big decision. Cheat codes? i know nothing aobut that . Though one time i figured out (by myself) how to make everything use only one 1 lockpick or multitool.

okay sorry but if it means anything i saw the movie at the theaters first. And when it comes out on video i will buy it i just wanted to watch it in the meantime. but do people still seriously care aobut that stuff still? who doesnt dl free songs? i tohught this was behind us. now pirating actual hundred $ programs like photoshop and 3d studio max is what you sohuld be more woried about, which i cared not to mention. not that i would do anything like that anyway. but seriously now.

all you do is start to pick a lock/security system (mulitool) then go to your inventory or something while you are there it will contniue to pick the lock while you are in inventory. i found this out by mistake by th way. just stay there long ebough for it to pick when u think its done get out of the inventory and it will be picked and u only used one
now i feel dirty more so then when i dl'ed lord of the rings

i reccomend getting another hdd and using norton ghost... that should get all your stuff off and you could use the extra hdd if your current one fails

You can pick up a 40gig for $80 now, and that's retail!
I remember when a 40MB hard drive was an untouchable dream at $189!!

money's not the biggest prob basically i cant install it myself cuz i dont know how, plus if I do it wont be covered by warranty i will prob send it in if i want to get a new hd.

Why wouldn't it be covered by warranty? Have you double-checked? Not many manufacturers are that absolute anymore. Computers are meant to be expanded on.

As for the installation, it really is a cinch.

I guess my biggest question is WHAT DO YOU HAVE? (make/model) and what upgrades have been done so far, if any?

I had 6gig to backup and restore on my new HDD so I made do with my 2 speed CD burner (yes ancient I know). It took some time to back everything up. 20 gig is a different matter, but if you have time to burn (no pun intended) then it is definately the cheaper option.

Norton Ghost is pretty reliable if you can afford a new HDD.

I think you could probably make that 20gig smaller by only isolating the files that you need. For example.. keep your Deus Ex saves but ditch the game. Remove unwanted applications etc. Basically remove everything that you can replace and backup only what you need. You'll probably end up with less than 20gig.

I had a 15gig drive chock full of ****. I put only what I wanted to back up into 'My Documents'. It was like boiling a cauldron of maple sap... boiled down to nothing. I was able to do a full backup on a single CD, and plenty of space left over.

ok dmoltrup if i installed a new hd myself the actual hd wouldnt be covered by their warranty and if something went wrong with the comp i dont want them blaming it on my installation and not giving me support they let me up for a pretty decent price. i have no previous upgrades my comp is ony like 2 months old!
my current hd is some seagate peice of tihs.

my winmx folder is all that i want to back up. all of it is important
has all my movies, music, etc... they took a long time to dl and some of it is rare. I might be able to kill a few gigs by losing some generic porn but thats it. I am not keeping any games just my saves.

I used winzip to test i zipped a 1.4 gig folder of movies (mpeg) and it was ;ike the same size after i zipped.

ok...i m gonna guide you through the hdd installation...
1. find your ide chain that has the current hdd on it
2. look on the new hdd for the jumper settings
3. follow the diagram on the hdd for jumper settings
4. install tha new hdd as a slave drive
5. find an open slot on your ide cable(the one with the current hdd)
6. look on the bottom of the hdd where the pins are to connect the ide cable
7. find the pin that has a nuber one next to it
8. taake your ide cable and line the side that has a red line or red dotted line up with the pin of the hdd that has the number 1 next to it
9. plug the ide cable in
10. find an open power supply plug and plug it in.
11. boot up the computer and rum command prompt to format the new hdd
12. finish the format, load windows, and run norton ghost

Its not how, where or when you got it or what you can get and its certainly not in the past its that we don't speak about it here at sysopt nor any of the other affiliate sites as it tends to get out of hand and brings in the lawsuits which we don't need.
