Retail Athlon XP fan question.
Thans for all the input on CPU type selection guys. Now I have another question. I've decided on the IWILL XP333-R MOBO and Athlon XP 1700. How good is the retail fan? I'm big on warranties and like the 3years on the retail version of the cpu and I don't mind paying a couple bucks extra. Since I'm upgrading from a PIII 750, I figure I will be happy running the athlon at it's stock speed for a while (NO OC for at least 2-3 months). Has anyone done any type of TEMP testing with it? My last question is what is the best LOW COST heatsink/fan for XP CPUs?

I've run mine with an upgraded retail h/s fan combo. The better h/s have a copper base with very thin copper fins that can disapate heat very quickly. Mine is an aluminum base h/s and it does a pretty good job. I am running a 1.4Ghz TB with about 51C temps at full load. The XP's run cooler.

Take my advice, ditch the retail and buy a new HS.
I detached the fan from the retail HS and bent one of my extra pci slot stips so that I could attach (just drilled one hole in it and angled it on one corner of the fan) the fan to the strip for a pci card cooler...works great!!! In turn I bought the ThermalTake Volcano 7+ HS for my 1800 XP....my baby is chillin now, but why wouldn't it I have a total of eleven...yes, I said eleven fans in my case. No worries I have a 450 watt PS to cover all the Wtz.
