    Trouble opening a .EXE file

I am trying to open a file in DOS that's about 500mb and it is an EXE file. But, I am getting a "Program is too big to fit in memory". The HDD is empty and is formated. What can I do?
    Thanks

dos was never meant to open 500mb files man

my 386 pushed the limit, just MAXING OUT to use Win3.1 which was considered HUGE and my hard drive was only 120mb at the time, they sort of stopped making newer DOS or reprogramming or anything its basically the same as it was about 9 years ago

Thanks for your response. But, OK how do I open it in any application. Because it won't open in win98. I get a message that says it is not a valid win32 application.

It appears the file is damaged.

If it's an archive of some kind you can try opening it with WinZip or WinRAR since it might be a damaged SFX archive.

The file won't open in WinZip.

It is a read-only file under properties. And won't let me alter that.

Go to a DOS window, goto the dir were the file is stored and type:

    ATTRIB -r -s -h +a <name_of_the_file>

Relace <name_of_the_file> with the .EXE file name.

This, of course will only work it the file is not located on a CD-ROM

...just out of cheer curiosity, were did you get the file?

...if the HDD is empty how did you put the file in it?

DL Dos Navigator. It is the BEST shell program I ever met. I use it up to these days.
It supports 17 types of archives, and sees them even if *.rar was changed to *.bs, for example. If DN enters this file, then it is an archive. Then I'll instruct you further.
