AMD K6/2-500 AFX Socket 7 CPU

Does anyone know if a AMD K6/2-500AFX Socket 7 CPU will work on a compaq 2282 which currently has a Cyrix M2 333mhz CPU (Socket 7).

Go over to Compaq's web site. They have a feature (don't remember where) that allows you to put your PC's serial number in and it tells what is inside. After you've done that you'll know what MOBO you have, and we'll know better if you can. Most likely it's possible, but not a sure fire thing.

I'm not totally sure, but I think the answer is yes and no.

That series will recognize the K6-2 but it does not support the 2.4v needed for the 500 nor does it support a 100fsb. The best you can do is set it to 2.2v, 75fsb and 5x mult. for a net speed of 375mhz. Since you will be underclocking the 2.2v might work ok. Also try a 2x multiplier setting, some boards interpret this as 6x.

The AFX is a 2.2v chip. But, it won't hit 600 at that. Just make sure it''s got a 5x multiplier at 100fsb, and recognizes the K6-2.

It should work fine. Those are great little chips.
