Linux users - list of essential libraries requested...

It seems like every time I try to compile a program distributed in xxx.TAR.GZ format, there is a required library I don't have.

Frequently this happens when I try to run RPMs.

PHP is the only program I have ever successfully compiled without a visit to http://www.rpmfind.net for a new library.

I want to make a CD containing all the major libraries required to compile Linux tar.gz's but I don't know what I need.

Is there such a list, or a CD available?

It's not likely that you will find a single location listing all the required libraries, as each program is written by a (usually) different individual. rpmfind.net has a list of the pre-requisites as well as a list of what each package provides. You might make it a habit of pulling off the required's at the time you get the package. If you save all the required libraries you can eventually make your CD.
