You have to find out if it is a slot processor or a socket processor!

    Then go here!

speedo i apreciate your helping me,
but all dell tells you is how to take a processor out and put one back in
they dont specify what processors the motherboard supports nor what the model no. motherboard it is,
now you can see why its frustraiting

if it helps i have a slotted processor

If you have had the cover off did it have any identifying numbers on the board?

Does the bios string show on the bottom left hand side of the screen upon bootup?

    Numbers like

    2A59L-XXX-XXX

    or

    51-XXX-XXX

i get nothing for bios, i looked and even tried forcing an error but nothing comes up saying bios.

I cant undo my pc as im disabled and cant monover around the back freely,

I want to upgrade my cpu and also see if i can upgrade anything else so i can get someone to do it. But i need to know the motherboard first.

im sorry if this is taking your time up
I thought it may have been an easy Q. with all the info i tried to supply from sisoft sandra, but obviously that was a waist of time too

Well, just looking over your system, if you want to upgrade something you might look at getting a new video adapter. Your PIII processor has lots of power to drive a better video card. You have lots of memory, but you could ditch the 64meg dimm and replace with a 128meg.

You don't need to know a lot about the board to carry out these changes. It just has to have an empty AGP slot for video and your memory you can take to your local computer store and ask them to match it. That is, if you want to make some improvements.

Getting a better processor won't help without an extreme improvment in the video adapter.

Time is something that I have to spare!

I have never had any experience with Dell machines!

With all of the people on this forum you would think somebody else would have one and maybe have some sort of answer for your Q.

Go HERE and download one of the cpu id programs and let it tell you what cpu you have. Then post back and let us know. Then we can probably reccomend what you computer might take.
The Unigue ID number listed in the info is for a P3 I bet. I don't think celrons had the cpu id number feature on them. Dell left the number for the cpu turned on. Most after market boards have a feature in the bious to turn off cpu id. Or I think this is what the Unique ID # is!
If the Unique ID# isn't your cpu id number then it might be the bious numbers go HERE and run those numbers and see if you come up with anything.

Go HERE and read the post by JohnE. Try this little program and see if it give your bious string numbers. Then go to the other web sites he lists to cross them out.
