Can't get system to run at 1.4MHz

    HELP!

    Built my first system with:

    1.4GHz Athlon
    AK31v2.0 MOBO
    256 MB DDR
    400W PS
    7200 RPM (40GB) HD

I can't get this system up to speed! Runs O.K. with original settings - for 1.0GHz with CPU clock at 100. It is jumperless and when I set it for 133 CPU clock and 1.4GHz it won't boot. The best I can get is with CPU clock at 100 and processor speed at 1.3.

Could it be my power supply (cheap - not on AMD list)?

    Please help!

    It is a 1.4 T-bird CPU?

    Your settings should be Multiplier @ 10.5 and CPU/DDR Clock @ 133.
Jim Yes I'm in the Navy. And proud of it.

    jscanuck:

I've never used any version of AK31. I've been using Iwill KK266's since I began AMD-ing. My "SmartMenu" presently (AwardBios) is set on Auto or Default (one or the other, I forget the exeact options but you get the idea) with a 1.4 GHz and it posts at 1.4 GHz. Have you an Auto or Default setting for Multiplier (Ratio) and Bus?

    or

If that doesn't work either, perhaps flashing your BIOS could help? Otherwise, I suspect a bad CPU or board. I think the PSU is not your problem, with all due respect to my fellow members.

Any sites with downloadable tests for PSU, CPU, MOBO?

    Welcome at sysopt.com!!!

I think your PSU is working fine. 400W is more than enough!
CPU is fine too I believe (it runs on lower speeds).

Does the board support 133MHz RAMs b.t.w.? If it is and your running on 133Mhz, be sure the memory sticks are PC133 ones!!
Otherwise discharge the CMOS, and set the BIOS again, try leaving the CPU setting at auto. If no succes than manual.
Still no succes upgrade (flash) your BIOS with the latest.

    I hope it helps.

When I boot up the machine with the clock at 10.5 and CPU at 133, I get the following:

    blank screen
    long tone
medium length tone followed by a lower, longer tone. I get the same medium length, followed by a lower longer tone if I press enter at this point.
    Do these tones mean anything??

Those are the BIOS beepcodes. More info at http://www.computerhope.com/beep.htm.

B.t.w. I see now that you have DDR RAM so I was wrong about mentioning PC133 in earlier post. Sorry.

Did you tried to discharge the CMOS already? Remember it erases the BIOS settings. Write does down so you can set them again.

are uou sure you have pc 2100 ddr(133mhz) sdram or is it pc1600(100mhz)... this could directly be your issue.

    Heeej overviewed that possibilty!!
You could be right there. The BIOS protects running 133MHz on those PC1600 and the system won't boot up.

Enter the bios under advanced chipset features

    Enter DRAM Clock/Drive Control

Enter current FSB Frequency, This should be set at 133

Enter current DRAM Frequency, This should be set at 133

Enter DRAM Clock and set this to Host CLK

Try this and see what you get!

    Still trying...

    Thanks for all your posts...

I have flashed the bios and the best i can get the machine to run at is 1133MHz (133 x 8.5). The DRAM settings are:

    DRAM clock: host clk
    DRAM timing: by spd

the new bios set the DRAM command rate to 2t and something called 'Active to Precharge' to Tras=6T.

When I try and go beyond a multiplier of 8.5 I get many wierd things:

    the system wont boot -or-

boots, windows loads and it becomes unstable (open a program and the system reboots) -or-

boots, windows starts to load and I get 'error loading explorer. exe. You must reinstall Windows' (yikes) - and then it reboots itself -or-

boots and get 'protection error' - 'himem.sys has detected unreliable XMS at address... or XMS driver not installed'

I am beginning to think that running Windows 98 (not SE) is the problem. I don't think it knows how to handle the RAM or the Processor speed. Any thoughts?

Also - I don't know what my RAM is, but tests O.K. using Docmem as it should be (256K DDR).

    thanks!
