I have already told you why. It doesn't have Freehand, PhotoShop, Dreamweaver, Flash, Illistrator, InDesign, ImageReady, Firworks, Director and many others or programs that compare. All Linux has is a bunch of do nothing freeware. With W2k I have the stability of Linux. I have the do something software that Linux doesn't have and I also can download a bunch worthless freeware just like Linux. W2k is the best.
    Say no yo Linux.

obviously you design web pages, not serve them. for graphics there are a lot of better Os's then Win2k, Mac's are revered for thier graphics. oh, and every graphics designer I know uses a Mac. the stability is better, the software is optomized for one type of processor, no worries about compatability/speed issues.

you talk about how great Win2k is, it's not great, just versitile, Linux is a multitasking environment, try working on 4-5 big pictures on your blessed Win2k machine, then try a mac, you'ld be surprized how fast your stability goes downhill.

Linux does not suck, it may not meet your requirements as a so called professional. if I was a web or file server, I wouldn't be running Win2k or mac, it would be OS/2, Unix or linux (or some other i haven't tried, solaris maybe).

if you are looking for specific needs to be met by a OS, then Win2k doesn't have it, it's used by everyone for anything with any hardware. WindOZE is a generic OS, it doesn't excel at any one application, it runs all programs equally. MacOS and BEOS are geared to graphics. Linux, unix, OS/2 , and some others are geared to serving.

to put it bluntly, you have no right posting that an OS won't do what it wasn't designed to do. You gonna complain when your escort won't do 200mph? in my personal opinion you have no idea what you are doing with computers, professionals use what suites thier needs. you don't, are you a professional?

ngc457, why are you not blaming Macromedia and Adobe for not porting those apps to Linux? The only problem I see with Linux is that not enough people are using it, and it is my understanding that is changing. Attitudes like yours are not helping this situation. Maybe if more people gave it a chance then companies would start porting their apps to Linux. That's just my opinion.

Anyway, this thread has inspired me to install Linux, thanks.

Well I must say, as I reply to this thread, it's with somewhat mixed feelings. On the one hand, I'm definitely biased against M$ for the present, due to their new activation scheme for WinXP. On the other hand, I have tried installing Linux (distro = Mandrake 7.2) with little success.

Thus I find myself presently with a dual-boot that includes Win2K and Win98SE. What frustrates me is that in a year or two WinXP will be a must-have if you're going to go with M$ - and I'm not messing with that. So I'm really interested on trying Linux again.

Now, you're probably wondering what problem I had with Linux. Well, here it is... it installed just fine; the problem was with the GUI's. I tried the GUI's that came with Mandrake (KDE, Gnome) but both would freeze as soon as I clicked on anything. I'm definitely willing to listen to advice on this, since I'm fairly certain I'll be wanting to use Linux in the not-too-distant future.

Also, the reason I haven't been too concerned with using Linux thus far is my machine is used primarily for gaming, and it seems (at least up until now) Win98 is the best OS for this purpose.

I do a lot of graphics work on Windows, Mac, SGI, Solaris. Okay linux and the other UNIX system's lack a major touch-up graphics tool like Photoshop. I do use GIMP but it lacks many of the professional features of Photoshop or Illustrator.
I'm the kind of person who uses the different OS's depending on their strengths.
My users have an issue with Linux and it's due to lack of a good desktop environment. GNOME and KDE are not quiet there yet.
MacOS X just show's the kind of potential a UNIX desktop can have. I find one of the most important features is user experience Mac's and Windows look polished but the UNIX varients look like they are free.
I think Linux will be an enthusisasts and server based OS, it's got a lot of work before it'll be my default desktop.

I'd suggest you start a new post to bring your problems to light. There are many skillful linux users here who can help you with the problems. Having them buried in this post won't do you much good.

I have to agree with the others on the troll bit. He made an statement that he knew was going to get people upset. His post either contradict each other in spots or aren't backed by facts.
I now also agree that this thread should be closed.

I just built a new pc and looked into linux. I spent many days reading up in here. Even installed it on my machine. Although linux looks nice and I love the fact someone is trying to compete with micro$oft, I too thing its useless at this point in time.
I cant get online because my modem will not work with linux (DSL USB speedstream 4060). Not all of my games work, except halflife.
I'm not going to spend more money to so i can use a OS that doesnt work with jackcrap, for the most part.
I do appreciate all the people spending time giving me info a few weeks back. When and if a operating system comes out that is compatable with most games and programs I will give it a go but linux has a long way to go.

Microsoft faced a similar situation back in the early and mid 80's. I remember having to really do some hunting in order to find any gaming software for PCDOS back then. Plenty of stuff for the Commodore or Apple owners, but Bill's little empire was just getting off the ground. I heard the same complaints from people back then that I read in this thread about Linux. What intrigued me enough to install 7.2(which was a breeze), was the open source nature, and also the people I have ran across who are using it. Where there's passion for something, typically you will find success. (being a football fan I'm sure you knew this. Hook'em Horns!!)

    YEP..!! Definitely close it.!

I personally don't like W2K. I installed it in my system because where I'm working I have to take care of the accounts, permissions, etc. (so I had to install it in my machine to learn how to do all that!). But win2k, although more stable, is slower than 98se (and you know this if you play games or do sound editing!).

In my system I have Mandrake 8 installed too and I got to tell you that it is very stable so I don't know what you did wrong! Everything works and if you are a programmer (or study CS or equivalent) you should know that linux (or any other variant) is the best for programmers! Try to use Visual Studio for C++ and you'll know what I mean!!!!!

I also use Red Hat 7.0 (we have a computer lab at the university where I work that has this distro installed) which I think is faster than Mandrake! And right now I'm getting to install and configure Solaris based machines (Solaris 8 is the OS. .. pretty good!).

For networking, *nix OS'es are definitely the best.! Although Microsoft has been working alot in "Securing" the windows enviroment, *nix still doesn't get affected by the new viruses out there.!

For your profession, yes, Microsoft OS'es do rather well but we have some SGI machines at the uni too and let me tell you..... UPGRADE!!! BE BRAVE.. OPEN YOUR MIND.! Ooopsss sorry.... I think you will have to use an OS based on *nix.!!! DARN...!!

Well,.. GOOD LUCK with WINDOWS and your PROFESSION.!!!!

    P.S. SOMEONE PLEASE CLOSE THIS>!!

How much do you wanna bet this guy grabbed a copy of Slackware 6 when 8 was out, had no manuals, and expected to have this Operating System setup while he was eating his pizza supper?

Truth is: Microsoft OS's ROCK. Linux OS's ROCK. Macintosh OS's ROCK!

They just don't rock at the same stuff!
