Star Office 6.0 beta -this could be it

The beta release of Star Office 6.0 is supposed to be available now: www.sun.com ..when we can FINALLY download the thing remains to be seen -the servers are apparently swamped.

If Star Office 6.0 lives up to all the promised new features this could be a devastating blow to Microsoft in the application department.

For those of you who have used Star Office in the past and found it slow, you should be pleased to hear that since the elimiation of the integrated desktop and modularizing of the appliction it no longer starts every part of the suite just to run a single appliction like the word processor.

Increased MS Office compatibility and several other enhanced features are also promised.

And yes, Star Office is available for Windows too...

Downloaded it at work and just installed it at home.

Did a typical install & it took about 250 meg of space.

Now loads in under 4 seconds on my Duron 600 with 320 Meg of RAM, much better than the 5.2 version.

The interface is still a bit square looking IMHO put I guess that isn't the end of the world

Will report back on stability & features when I have used it a bit more.

    Regards

    Eddy

Yep, this could be it. I'll be following this one closely. Will probably wait until the final release, though. Not too keen on Betas.
    Given enough time & money,
    Microsoft will re-invent Unix.

Hmmm strange, I downloaded it over ADSL at work from the standard server @ over 100 KB/s with no problems.

Guess I must just be lucky

okay - finally got it! took 2 1/2 hours to download on my SDSL connectection but anyway -

HOLY ****! It imported my word file from word 95 with only one problem. This is something word97 does not do. This document is chuck full formula's, charts and crazy mathmatical symbols and drawings. The problem -a ' mark in some equations was a copyright symbol instead. I am most impressed. ad this is beta....

I have the Linux version at home and the Win98 version at work. They are very unstable, but that is to be expected with beta. SO translates to/from Word exceptionally! It only messed up the center alignment on most of my documents (and changed an omega symbol to a question mark in another). I like it and I can't wait for the final release.
Be sure to read the readme files. Don't do any thing important in the beta because the file formats are different and won't translate to 6.0 final.

IMHO, that is a correct statement.
