    Anti Virus Software

what anti virus software do you guys prefer?

a lot of people are using mcaffee because of the large database on it compared to norton

    but..

someone i know from china who moved to the USA caught a virus, mcaffee and norton did not pick it up, but a chinese anti virus managed to pick it up

i was thinking of leaving my mcaffee behind and having her teach me how to use the chinese anti virus

    what do you all think?

    Uh.

Chinese anti-virus program caught it and not Norton? Are you sure it was up-to-date?

I do not like McAfee in the first place, and now that they have a similar idea to Microsoft's .NET, I hate it even more.

I have always used Norton. I have never gotten a virus once.

    Enough Said.

yes.. i update the anti-virus data files almost every day

mcaffee also has a larger database compared to norton

so im not at all surprised that norton didn't pick it up

I have used Nortons for years and have much faith in the company and their software.

You must keep your definitions updated for it to work properly. Most people do not.

I really don't know what to say on this one. I've got friends who swear to McAfee and others to Norton. Some claim Norton found viruses that McAfee did not. Right now I'm using McAfee Virus Scan and its only detected one virus which was W32/Nimda@MM that I got a few days ago in an e-mail. I safely deleted it and have had no problems. I assume the program is doing its job.

BTW- I check for updates every other day.

Just my .02, McAfee is garbage, always liked and trusted Norton! Norton became a real resource hog, so now I'm running PC-cillin 2000!

Also, neither Norton or McAfee will stop "malicious pranks", but PC-cillin will! I keep my definitions up to date and have not become infected by anything while I've had PC-cillin on my computers. I have seen people running McAfee and Norton infected WITH up to date definitions!

I used to run Norton but I wasnt happy with the live update. I decided to change over to a combo. of AVP and AVX. So far so good!...Steve

I'm using Norton 2001 with the Live Update feature. It seems to work well and I like the way it updates itself so that it always has the latest definitions. I used McAfee for years but it seemed like it slowed down the machine quite a bit.

Both McAfee and Norton are excellent and I have used them for yaers. But I agree with Sharder8 that both are resource hogs and slow up your PC. All Norton products do that, though they are excellent in other respects. So I turn them on only when necessary.
I switched to InnoculatePE which is free and its rated #1 by PC MAG.

Quite possibly the Chinese program caught the virus as it may have been a "regional" virus and they had it and were able to add it in their definitions before NAV or McAfee.

Only thing I can add: Keep the AV, whichever one you use, uptodate.

For one year its free. At work we have Norton 7.5 Corporate Edition and its been regularly updating but I don't know if they pay anything. If you go to www.download.com, they regularly put McAfee and Norton updates free, though.
