GIF files are limited to 256 colors unlike JPG, TIF, BMP, etc which support millions of colors. I'm not sure about GIMP, but most applications will automatically convert the GIF file as an index color image when saved as GIF...

*GIMP either tells you that the image must be indexed, or the option to save as gif is simply grayed out.

For GIMP tutorials and excercises I would have to recommend looking at commercial books -circa $29 is very reasonable, I think, for a Photoshop-like program that is otherwise basically free.

    -also, check this out http://www.disordered.org/Animate.html

robin801 - too bad you live so far from CA - I would loan you my (now outdated) "The GIMP" by Phillis Davis. It was a pretty good investment in its day -$17.99 (much of it still applies, but GIMP has gotten better.

If you bought the full version of Mandrake 8 it may have come with a "book" (on CD #4-5?) about GIMP.

    Robin,

It sounds like you just got the bare minimum of Mandrake - the "PowerPack" edition of Mandrake 8 comes with 7 CDs, unfortunately I have not found an ebook for GIMP included in the set.

The "Deluxe" boxed set of Mandrake 7.2 did include 4 ebooks, according to the picture on the box one ebook was supposed to be Sam's "Teach Yourself GIMP in 24-hours," but on the CD was something else -sorry. I would have emailed it to you.

You can download a manual for GIMP here http://manual.gimp.org/

Yeah, there is just such an ebook on CD4 of the Mandrake 7.2 CDs but the file is 8.2MB in size so, needless to say, I won't be emailing that - besides, it is outdated now.

I believe Image Ready isn't a stand-alone-application. This is something that was included with Photoshop 5.5 and 6.0 package. Image Ready installs automatically when Photoshop 5.5 or 6.0 is installed without an option...
