What is the Best OS for Gaming?

I am building a new computer for Gaming. I will have a 1.4Ghz AMD, Abit KG7-Raid Motherboard, 512MB DDRam, GForce3 video card, and IBM Deskstar 60GB hard drive. However, I am not sure what is the best Operating System I should install on it. I have DSL, and the system is only for Gaming and surfing the web. Got any ideas?

Well, even though I hear a lot of people not liking Windows ME because they have so many problems, I like it.. I have never had any problems with it at all.. So I would suggest Windows ME.. I would say Windows 2000, but I have that and I have had a few games that would not work on it because the games were not compatible with Windows 2000. The games that did work in 2000 worked very nice though. Anyway, I would suggest ME.

Yeah, win2k for me anyway seems to run the games really well, however there are some games (mostly older ones) that won't work under win2k. I have a dual boot setup using win98/win2k... I only have a couple games that won't run on win98 and I ver very rarely even play those games, so I hardly ever boot into 98.

If it's your only OS I would say Win98SE, If it is for gaming only and you are going to dual boot with something more stable then WinME is good.

    Most powerful OS: Be/Linux/OSx

    Best for gaming: Win2K

    Most compatrible 98se/ME (I perfer 98 'cuz it's faster).

    WinME is more stable
huh?! you must be one of the few who believe that. I heard problems with running older games in DOS using me. if your looking towards the win9x kernel go win98 se

I use win2k. i love it to death for games and i don't play the old games so it don't affect me.

    For gaming?
Windows 98 SE is the best micro$oft you can find
Not all games run well under Win 2k. Win Me is not so stable.
    Go with win 98SE

I agree with GroundZero...Win2k is the best...it is the most stable and all newer games run in it fine. And there are patches for most games that won't work. So my choice would be Windows 2000, but if you don't want to mess with it go with Win 98.

Thanks for the replys, but I think I will go with Windows 2000 Pro. (If that fails. I can always go back to Windows 98 SE)

    Thanks
