Smile Old PC's Still Going Strong

I'm just curious, but whats the oldest / slowest computer you've managed to get Windows 95/98 running on? I only ask because I managed to put Win98 on a 486-66 20MB RAM 650MB HD. I thought it would run real sh1t but it's actually not too bad. I've got apps such as Word Corel etc... and they all run too!!! Still, theres nothing like Linux to speed up an old PC.

I've had Win95 running on my 486slc25 laptop with 8mb(now 16mb) and 160mb hard drive. going up to 16mb made quite a difference!! I now run Windows For Workgroups 3.11 on her and just use her for Autoroute....

    I had Win 3.1 running on a 286 with 1 (ONE!) Mb RAM and a 20Mb HDD. I later upgraded it to a whole 2.5Mb RAM. Not too slow . . .

Win95/98? I have Windows 98 SE running just fine on a 486 (AMD 5x86/133MHz overdrive), 48Mb RAM and a 3.2Gb HDD. Upgrading the video card from an ISA Cirrus Logic to a PCI ATI Mach32 made quite a difference.

It runs Word, WordPerfect and, in fact, almost anything except many of the games made within the last two years.

Have '95b running on a Compaq laptop - 486 SX25, 8mb ram, 340 hd. Works OK, but only used for a few things & nothing taxing.

Have ran '95a on a 386 DX40 with 8mb ram. Ran fine after loaded, but was a BEAR to install!

Compac p100 w/8mb ram Win 95, slow. Generic PC P100o/c to 120mhz w/64 ram(edo)win98 ROCKET SHIP. P100 Generic o/c to 120mhz, 32 ram, Win98 runs real good.. all are "net" machines, scanner & Printer only. All moved scanned info rather slowly, but considering the times for modern pc's ,, not too shabby.. Last year I'd said anything under a 350PII was junk,, for the record "I WAS WRONG" Take me to your leader.

Win95 on an AST 386 20Mhz machine upgraded with a TI 486SLC 40Mhz chip with 16MB of RAM.

I also installed Windows 3.0 on my Original IBM PC (the one that started it all...) way back when. It took up too much of my 20MB hard drive so I nuked it.

The computer I am using at home is a 486 with win98 on it. Recently I obtained 4 off 1Mb 30 pin sims- increasing my memory from 16Mb to the massive 20Mb.

I run a 1.2Gb Maxtor diamond Hard drive, ISA graphics and sound card. No modem.

I got the system given to me and I am always using it. The only thing I have bought is a creative x48 cd-rom drive. At times I get frustrated at the speed mainly with graphics. Other than that it is fine for playing DOS games and Office work.

I had Win95 installed on a 386DX25 with 4megs of RAM, 40meg hdd, and a Philips 1X CDROM (LMS-205, if I remember right). It was a neat trick to because Win95 kept telling me that I didn't have enough hdd space even with a bare bones custom installation so I hooked up my 234meg hdd from my 486 which was a hell of a trick to because the bios didn't support more than 202meg. Anyhoo, once I got that hooked up I installed Win95 on the 234meg hdd and I as had guessed an installation with the options I wanted only took 32megs of space so I used a drive copy program to mirror it on the 40meg hdd. Then I loaded up Win95 off the 40meg hdd (worked great) and compressed it. So in the end I had a 386DX25, 4meg of RAM, 40meg hdd compressed with Win95 installed and 22 megs of free space ready to run! If it hadn't been for the lousy on-board video that I could not disable and install a better card, it wouldn't have worked to badly. That on-board video was hideously slow though. That computer now resides at a my friend's grandparents house. It even has a USR 14.4 modem and a sound card now. I hear they play a slot machine game on it a lot. I wonder if I could get Win98SE on there and setup a FAT32.

I don't have Win on it, but my old machines my 486. It's been a companion to me on my technical journey and it WON'T BLOODY DIE!!!

I've spilled water in it, poured mercury in it while on and I even managed to fix the FDD (sort of) after standing on it!!

They're not old, but I have Win98 on my IBM P75 laptop and Win95 on my Toshiba P75 laptop.

The oldest computer that I have is a Tandy 1400LT laptop which hasn't been fired up in about 2 years. The oldest still in use is a Packard Bell 386sx16 with 16MB of RAM and a 250MB HD running MS-DOS 6.22 and Win3.1. The slowest is my HP 200LX 1MB Palmtop running MS-DOS 5.0 at 8.77MHz, and I still use it.
