Computer Upgrade Recommendations for Better Overall/Gaming Performance

Hello forum, this is my first post. I'd simply like people's opinions on what I could change to my system to increase its performance for general use and or gaming purposes. My current system specs are as follows:

    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 950 @ 3.07GHz, 8 Cores
Video Card: AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series, 1.0 GB Dedicated Memory, 4.0 GB Total Memory
    Memory: 8.2 GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8 Professional Edition (build 9200), 64-bit

    Thank you for your suggestions.

If you don't have one already, I'd get an SSD.

You could update your graphics card, otherwise there isn't a whole lot to change there. The Radeon HD R9 290X would be a beefy upgrade but honestly you probably don't need it. If you're experiencing slowdowns you probably need to do some cleanup on your system. Maybe even just update your drivers.

There has never been a less exciting time to do a PC overhaul than the last 3 years.
