Did you run the manufacturer's hard drive diags? chkdsk is not enough.

Definitely test the hard drive with manufacturer diagnostic tools per Midknyte's suggestion. It may tell you more about its health, as chkdsk really only repairs filesystem issues and not the underlying source of the problem.
If your memory tested good and the CPU tested good, and its just hanging while loading Windows, I would wager you have a bad driver holding up the boot process, or perhaps a bad piece of software. Are you using a vanilla copy of Windows XP MCE?

Have tried to boot to win xp pro and home/vista/& win 7 boot disk on 3 diff hd disks that work on diff pc. Boot from laptop & 2 ex dvd players still hangs at inspecting hardware configuration.
The hd will open xp on diff pc bot not on this one.

You can't just move a hard drive from one system to another. The HAL would probably be different, so it wouldn't boot properly. Do you mean you were trying to reinstall Windows after swapping hard drives?
Did you run a ram diag like memtest86+? I see you ran the microsoft diag, but I don't think that is as thorough.
Otherwise, it sounds like it might be a bad motherboard. At that point, it's probably better to get a new laptop.

Run both mem tests, one will find what the other misses is what I have found.

Tried all the above before I moved it to desktop as 2nd hd.Replaced memory with known good .It got past win start up to installing drivers before it blue screen as boot disk on desktop that was all i needed to know.I back it up when i had it installed as 2nd hd on desktop and it worked fine as 2nd hd thats when i defag and chkdsk.

Nope. There aren't many options when fixing laptops. If it's anything besides hard drive or ram, chances are you're better off buying a new one.
