DOS Guru Needed
January 10, 2012
Dear Forum,
I'm jumping from Windows 98SE to Windows 7 and having a problem
using Norton's Ghost with 7.
I'm sure getting the answer to these four questions will lead me on a path
to success:
First, this is my new box's Hard Drive.........
1 TB Hitachi 7200 RPM
Pre-partitioned by Bootable CD of "EaseUS Partition Master Pro v9.0", which is
a 2012 version of good old DOS's "Partition Magic".
http://www.partition-tool.com/professional.htm
C: 75 Gigs NTFS Windows 7
D: 25 Gigs NTFS Program Files
E: 15 Gigs NTFS Used for making 4 Gig+ DVD files
F: 600 Gigs Fat32
G: 30 Gigs Fat32 Ghost Images
H: to M: 3 to 30 Gigs in size, all Fat32.
1. What is the maximum size partition that DOS, from a Windows 98SE boot disk,
can see?
2. Is there a newer version of DOS out there, perhaps from a Windows ME boot
floppy, or Windows XP?
3. When I used Partition Master, after the Primary 75 Gig C: was made, I could
have gone two different routes...
A: Make the balance of the HDD an "Extended Partition" and then make D: to M:
all "Logical Drives" within that "Extended Partition".
B: Make the balance of the HDD, D: to M: ALL "Logical Drives".
Which is the proper way to go?
4. With the C:, D: and E: being NTFS, when I boot the HDD with a floppy boot
disk and get the A: prompt, if I type C: and hit enter, will I get a C:
prompt that in actuality will be the F: drive?
Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Which version of Ghost are you using?
Older versions will not work with newer versions of Windows.
Partition Magic same thing. Why I gave up on them years ago.

Train,
>Which version of Ghost are you using?
v11.5 from GSS v2.5
>Partition Magic same thing.
I'm not using Partition Magic. As I said above: "Pre-partitioned by Bootable
CD of "EaseUS Partition Master Pro v9.0", which is a 2012 version of good old
DOS's "Partition Magic"." EaseUS is not PM, but a modern "copy-cat" of it.
In my Windows 98SE box I have been using Ghost Corporate v7.5 on various floppies
and it has worked PERFECTLY for the past 9 years, but now, taking the plunge into
a new Windows 7 box (i5-2500K, 8 Gigs) has me stuck.
What I'm up against is trying to use v11.5 that is too big to fit on a floppy.
What I want to do is put Ghost v11.5's DOS exe file in the !-Ghost folder
on the G: Drive with 9 batch files. Those batch files would be for making, CRC
checking and restoring Ghost images.
When I boot the computer with my "Make Image To HDD" floppy, it will load
all the proper files and the Autoexec.bat file will tell the computer to go to
the G: drives !-Ghost folder and trigger the "MakeHDD.bat" file and THAT file
will tell Ghost115.exe to make an image of the C: drive, name it Newest.gho,
CRC check it and put it in the G: drives 01_Ghost folder.
What has been working for the past 9 years flawlessly with Ghost v7.5 is:
@echo off
Ghost75.exe -clone,mode=pdump,src=1:1,dst=G:\01_Ghost\Newest.gh o -z3 -fx -sure
Ghost75.exe -chkimg,G:\01_Ghost\Newest.gho -sure
The only way I can get near this is to make a Bootable CD with an Autoexec
file like so:
@echo off
Ghost115.exe -clone,mode=pdump,src=1:1,dst=1:5\01_Ghost\Newest.g ho -z3 -fx -sure
Ghost115.exe -chkimg,1:5\01_Ghost\Newest.gho -sure
After the clone, I get an A prompt.
Going through the "go into BIOS and change to CD boot, do the job, reboot
go into the BIOS again, change to HDD boot" **** is a pain compared to....
"Pop in the proper floppy, turn on the computer and walk away".

I just leave the cd burner as the first boot device on my desktop and Use the F12 key on the laptop to select the cd burner which is a one time thing. Yes gots to do it each boot up with the lapper.
Boy did I misread some words.
chkimg,G: and chkimg,1:5 says to me that there may be a ram drive and we need to figure out what G changed to.

Way too old for Win7.
You don't use floppied to boot the newer Ghost versions; you need to boot from the CD.
