Best/recommended antivirus
Hey guys -
I'm setting up my new box, and before I go ahead and install ESET NOD32, I'm wondering if anybody is recommending any of the other/new products out there ahead of ESET.
Thanks.

If you already paid for NOD32, I don't see a significant reason to change. It's still rated pretty high.

I was conflicted because I see there are many new or revamped products out there, and even some free products getting good reviews - so looking to make the best decision on what to go with at this point in time.
I'm never sure what to make of the comparative tests because many of these products now will flag something like a keygen as a "hack tool" or something of the like, so I have no idea what is being counted as legit malware anymore.
Thanks.

I use free products on my home computers. I have used Microsoft Security essentials but have been infected with malware several times so I no longer use it.
I use Avast on most of my computers and have never had an infection from a virus. My kids do tend to get new malware every so often.
I am using Comodo on the kids primary computer. I have not had to remove any malware or viruses from the machine in the last 6 months.
I use Avira on one laptop. It has never had an infection. I do get ads/requests to purchase Avira form the AV.
I think a lot of using an antivirus product will come down to user preference. You want something effective and easy to use without creating too much bloat. If you are a safe surfer, any free product will likely work for you. By safe I mean no pirate software, no X rated material, etc....

Avast or Avira are probably the best freebies. Haven't used Comodo.
This used to work on Avira. Might not on the newer version:

Thanks - to be clear, I am seeking the best overall, not the best of the free ones.

You will get false positives and some keygens are still going to be detected as malware. There's no 100% perfect AV. You can exclude certain folders if you need to.
Like I said, you can stick with NOD32. I don't see one AV being head and shoulders above another. You can see if anyone else wants to chime in.

Thanks for the input - I will probably stick with NOD32 and buy a new license. It has worked well. Alternately, I do have the webroot product, which I was able to get for free and might give it a try but it seems to have gotten mixed reviews.
Thanks.

I dont know how old this post is. But recently this december I have installed Norton 360 on 6 of my pcs including my laptops. It isnt a resource hog like it used to be. And I used AVAST and AVIR on my systems. Their ok for being free, but I still got some viruses with AVAST. So now I keep my systems clean and running efficient with Norton. It is finally in my opinion a good product to use. At least for my systems.

Thanks for weighing in. It's good to hear if Norton is cleaning up their act, but it would take a whole lot more persuasion for me to ever use their products again anytime soon.

Remember, no anti virus is 100% perfect.
Free Avira works wonders for the grandkids and I use MSE which works fine too.
