PCIx 3.0 backwards compatibility question
Hi there -
I am building my new box based on the ASUS motherboard shown here -
http://promotions.newegg.com/ASUS/11...%2f696x288.jpg
or here -
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131791
This board features two PCIx 3.0-ready slots and one PCIx 2.0 slot. Best I can tell, it looks like I can plug my single PCIx 2.0 video card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121469) into any of the three PCIx slots and it would work properly.
Is this correct? Can I use any slot?
Thanks.
Mike

I would place the video card in the PCI-E slot closes to the cpu and yes you had best read this.

Also, I read through the link you included - what was it that you particularly wanted me to get out of reading that?
Thanks.

Such is the case at the moment – ASRock and MSI are doing their damnedest to make PCI-Express 3 support a selling point for their motherboards, even though processor support won’t happen until Intel’s Ivy Bridge processor hit the market next year.
(single @ x16
dial @ 8)
The first is setup for full video and the 2nd one for half that, if I read right.
You can try it, but if you do, let us know how it works out.

Hey there -
I've setup the PC with the card in the second slot, versus the recommended first slot. How would I determine if it is running at x16 or x8?
Thanks.

It runs at 16 until you hook in a second video card. That is when it drops.

@Train - You had suggested that I test it to make sure it is running at x16 in your previous post - at least that was my understanding. I have the card plugged into the second slot, which you had recommended against, so I was wondering if there is any way to confirm that it is indeed running at x16. Or were you just thinking that it would not work at all in the second slot?
Thanks.

Sorry, just realized that both slots basically were for video.
That is a unusual situation for me. Again sorry I goofed!
