    also on top of this........nothing seems to want to open and if it does...then i get the "choose the program to open this file with" its very strange. I guess i should have also mentioned i had just removed a virus and all this is directly related to what happened after i removed it. I ran a script that enables exe to work again but it seems to only have fixed Firefox and a few other things. IE8 still comes up with the "open with" menu.

    the registry fix worked for msn like a charm. but previous issue i posted still exists

    i just went through that open with what program delema. it stemed from a virus(maleware) which avir av picked up on, there was 11 infections 2 of which were regestry related,(sorry, didnt jot down names) but I removed all and Im prety certain the regestry items involved were sys/32.dll files. hence the open with thing. I did a repair install of win xp but it didnt help at all. i ended up doing a tactical format and clean install. hopefully you have a happier ending.
