SSD vs VelociRaptor

Gentleman,

I have a quick question regarding a purchase. I need to add an HDD for OS and apps. The apps are 7 ultimate, Revit 2011, 3D Studio Max, MS Office Suite, InDesign and Primivera. Considering how apps grow over time, plus a working buffer, I figured a 150 Gig drive should cover me for awhile.
Issue 15Og SSD are not inexpensive and from what I have research, there will be no benefit or marginal vs a rotational drive given the apps I use? Also, I am not into chasing nano seconds at startup.

I am leaning towards the 150G VR.

Comments and feedback would be appreciated.

FYI, the rig is a Dualie Tyan S2915E, 4G KVR, 640g Carver Black HDD. The majority of my work is Architectural desing and PM.

A SSD over 120 GB with Win 7 and those programs, should be just fine.

Just remember to disable defragging so you do not shorten the life of the SSD.

Its always a tuff call. On one hand I can't go fast enough...On the other hand getting a 1TB standard drive for a lot lest then the two you mentioned is much cheaper..

SSDs are significantly faster than Raptors for most benchmarks. If you're using the 640GB drive as your data drive, then a 120GB SSD would be a good match.

You're running a lot of the programs I am and the same OS. I've gone with a raptor, two 500 g's and a 1 tb for working/data. Used to have RAID 0's and all that stuff. Performance difference is minor at best, like you said seconds at most.
Best speed boost I got was 64 bit OS and apps with 12 gigs of memory.
I'm waiting for the SSD's to come down in price some more.
