    Post 98SE Installation

I have an HP Pavilion 6640C upon which I'm trying to install Windows 98SE.

I get as far as this blue screen, and then it just hangs:

"Setup is preparing to install Windows.

    ....

    ....

To continue, press ENTER. To quit Setup, press ESC."

I have checked, formatted, and set the HDD active. It seems O.K.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

    Thank-you.

I remember having to copy windows over to my desktop to make it install sometimes.

    Maybe the cdrom is bad?

You first have to partition the drive with FDISK, restart, and format the drive, adding system files as you do.
Use the command format C: /s to do so.
Restart with CDROM support and run Setup from the CD drive.
It's been a while, but think that was the standard procedure.

    Thanks for the replies.

I did as you said OT (used format C: /s) but the setup still hangs at the same screen.

Is an HP setup any different? I am using a burned 98SE CD, and I can't remember it's origin.

    Thanks.

Like druggas said, the CD may be bad. To copy the CD to the hard drive, use the following commands,
If you are on the A: drive, move to C:
    A:\ C:

    C:\md win98 (This creates a directory for Win98)
    C:\copy D:\win98 C:\win98 (This assumes your CD drive is D: )
    C:\cd win98
    C:\win98\setup

If the copy does not complete, The CD is bad.

Setup on an HP should be no different.

The advantage of formatting before setup is that you can check the health of the hard drive.

It could indeed be a bad CD, considering it's age. It's probably not the CD drive because setup does start.

May just need to clean the cd.
Seen that do the trick lots of times.

Liquid dish soap, just a couple drops, and rub the surface with your finger tips.
Rinse real good and I let them air dry.
Can clean them with 90+% rubbing alcohol too.

Haqd to use something like this a few times also.

    Thanks for the replies.

I followed the commands in OT's post, and after a long period of copying files, it still hangs at the same place:

"To continue, press ENTER. To quit Setup, press ESC."

The last 4 lines of the copy process were:

    E:\WIN98\WIN98_74.CAB
    E:\WIN98\WIN98_OL.CAB
    E:\WIN98\XMSMMGR.EXE
    101 file(s) copied

I believe the CD drive was D: before the Ramdrive.

Right now I'm just waiting for the CD to dry, after using Sunlight dish soap.

I also have 70 percent rubbing alcohol if anyone thinks I should use it?

Try the cd first before using the alcohol.

I tried again after cleaning the CD, to no avail.

I then put the HDD in an external enclosure, plugged it in to my "real" PC, and explored it.

It has a WIN98 folder with 101 files, mostly .CAB. It also has SETUP.EXE.

Would it make sense to put it back in the HP PC, and install it from MS-DOS, and is there anything I need to know?

    Thanks.

Lets assume the W98se CD is the problem for whatever reason... bad burn, incompatible media, scratches, etc.
Copying to the hard drive will produce the same problem.

Some CD/DVD drives can read better than others, so I would try another CD/DVD drive, newer the better.

Next step would be to try a different W98se CD.

I have installed an LG CDRW that is 5 years newer than the HP Writer, and I have previously tested it, and it was working at that time. I am currently running a Surface Scan on the HDD, and would like to know what my next steps will be if the scan is O.K. For instance, I have a 98SE Boot Disc, so what Boot Order will I set in the BIOS? Is MS-DOS an option?

    Thanks.
