    DVD-ROM cannot read all DVDs

    Hi folks,

I have a NEC DVD-RW ND-3550A player on my computer. I have Windows XP professional and it reads many DVDs but not all. I just received a DVD from Netflix which it was released this week (brand new) and it cannot read it. The DVD rom had no problems reading the other two DVDs that came the same day. I checked the firmware and it is up to date.

I'm ready to go out an purchase a new DVD-rom, but I want to make sure that this one needs to be replaced before I purchase a new one!

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

You can try cleaning the lens, but it might just be going bad. You already updated the firmware, so that's about all you can do for media compatibility.

Check teh surface of the DVD. I have had to clean them before dvd burners could read them. Yep all but one was a rental like that.

I have gotten a few bad DVD's from Netflix before that wouldn't play or locked up in the middle of playback. Try it in another DVD player, pc or other, and see if its the dvd player or the DVD.

    DVD-ROM cannot read all DVDs

    Dear friends,

Thank you very much for your input and prompt responses. As always, folks at SysOpt.com are very helpful.

Over time I have tried to clean the DVDs, I clean the lens of the DVD-RW, updated the firmware, but the bottom line is that the hardware was in its way out.

Last weekend I purchased a new DVD-RW and it reads all the DVDs I couldn't read with my old DVD-RW. Problem resolved.

Once again, Thank you very much for all your help.
