Cannot get past Boot from CD screen

I am running Win XP Prof. and I cannot get computer past this screen to start up

    : Verifying DMI Pool Data.........
    Boot from CD:
Press any key to boot from CD"

I CAN boot to cd and go into recovery mode on XP Installation disk.

I did the following with no improvements:

after booting to XP CD in Recovery
    I did this
    "attrib -h-r-s C:\boot.ini
    Del C:\boot.ini
    Bootcfg /rebuild fixboot"

    Then it ask
"Add installation to boot list? (yes/no/all)" I clicked Yes
THen it ask "Enter Load Identifier"
    I entereed "Windows XP Professional"
Then it ask to enter OS Load options
and I entered /fastdetect then enter

I exited out and restarted computer, and I now still get same mess. above.

    "Verifying DMI Pool Data......
    Boot from CD :
Press any key to boot from CD...."
    and it just hangs there

    NE Ideas?

that did not offer much help.

Slip streaming not working or I am not sure how to create it.

I put Orginal XP Prof . Disk in Windows CD Drive
I copied Service pack 2 to desktop and put that in Auto stream
IT (Autostream recognized Org. XP Disk but said "build unknown" on Service pack 2

Will, you are not telling us whether there's a CD in the drive or not. If there is, remove it.

Use Autostreamer to slipstream a CD. It's easier.

If you *are* using Autostreamer, it's not clear from your post. I have never heard of "Auto stream IT".

    I am using AutoStreamer.
    Autostreamer 1.0.33 description
Basically, all it really needs is a source (that being an original Windows CD or a local share) and a Service Pack file

I put in my laptop Autostreamer program.
Run the program and have the Windows XP Prof. Disk in cd/dvd drive.
    AND
The Service Pack file on Desk top just like it asks for.

Autostreamer finds Windows CD and says
    "windows CD drive: D:
    Operating System: Windows XP Family
    Build: 5.1.2600.0(Gold)
    Size: 670MB"
    Then below that:
Service Pack File: C:desktop where I copied service pack
    Build unknown

You should first slipstream SP1a or SP2 first, then slipstream SP3. Remember that SP3 requires SP1a or higher to be installed first, so the same rule applies for the slipstream.

    http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Windo...ce_Pack_3.html

Windows XP (Gold): Slipstreaming SP3 seemed to work fine... untill it came to the point I had to activate Windows XP. It would not activate XP over the Internet & could also not update via the phone using the automated system. I didn't speak to a live person about it though. Without activating I couldn't use Windows Update without activating.

    After following this link;
    http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...slipstream.asp

and going thru step 3., I get the following pop up message Not shown on his example.

"X Failed to copy some of all of the files necessary for integrated install.
    Please check that:
a.No network or copy errors occurred during the intergration process.
b.The format of the destination directory is correct.
The files to be integrated must reside in an i386 and/or
    ia64 or nec98 directory.
(i.e. for an i386 share, if you typed "update/s:c:\cdshare",
the files must be in the c:\cdshare\i386 directory)."
    Now what??
PS: I am using my laptop to perform this merge and using vista and running everything as admin.

Where is the i386 folder and are the contents of that folder complete?

Are you trying to slipstream SP1 or 2 first?

    I have copied to C:\XP\

my xp professional cd. which is:
    Operating System: Windows XP Family(Professional)
    Build: 5.1.2600.0(Gold)
    Size: 670MB"

I downloaded SP2 update from MS and put in folder as instructed
I expanded the i386 as instructed and then after step 3, I got that pop up message.

    I do not have SP1.
    I have only SP2
    and SP3 update disks

With Autostreamer, you shouldn't have to expand SP2. Leave it as a package.

If you have the original XP CD, use that as a source instead of copying the i386 folder to C:\XP. That's the best way to be sure that it's complete. This way, the source for XP is simply your CD drive letter. The path doesn't include "i386".

Before doing a repair install it is advisable to check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic disc and memory with memtest. You can find links to these things in Midknyte's signature (Tech tools).

The path should no be C:\Desktop. There is no such path. It should be:

    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Desktop.
