So far it's back to normal. Thanks! I'm guessing it was one of those COM add-ins that did it, although why it kicked in on the same day I installed the router is still a question.

Strange things can happen.
I have a 9month old system here and it's only got fully patched XP pro with office installed.
i installed google earth and the machine would freeze or BSOD as soon as you clicked the icon, didn't matter if it was the desktop icon or the start menu.
un-install system was fine. Re-install google maps, try to launch and problem returned as soon as you tried launchine it.
i've installed other apps like photoshop need for speed shift etc and it runs perfectly. But try installing the google earth and nope doesn't like it.
