HD led flashes
New PC, first time for total Sata drives, no ide or floppy.
After the system starts and normalizes the HD led still flashes slowely all the time. On any of my 100's of builds with IDE the HD led will flash on start up then finally stop when the system is idle, this one doesn't.
I checked to see if anything was running in device mngr. but nothing is running?
I'm wondering if this is a normal condition with Sata?

Unplug LED light cable and or mention which OS your using
Could go into the Drive Properties and turn off indexing to see if that makes a difference.

Being SATA has nothing to do with it. Try Process Explorer.

Could be a number of things. Check to see if the Indexing service is running. If you have Google Desktop or a similar local search indexer, the same applies.
Some antivirus/malware scanners look for trouble all of the time as well.
A new install may take some time to settle down too.
When you set up, did you select "IDE Emulation" in BIOS or AHCI?

AHCI..this is a new install so have not installed anti-virus or malware yet. XP pro sp3. Still looking but haven't found the culprit yet.

AHCI mode makes the drives "hot-pluggable". Who knows what sort of caching or indexing is necessary to allow for this? I would assume that this is normal behavior.
Have you tried to see if Standby and Hibernation work properly?

Thanks Bill, I'll change it in the BIOS and see what shakes.

FYI - while it is easy to go from AHCI to IDE, the reverse is not true unless the proper AHCI driver package is installed. In your case, it is.

in the time of Win9x and even WinXP it was normal for the CD / DVD ROM to be pinged by the OS.
Disabling the auto insert launch feature will prevent it from doing that every few seconds.

Gamer,
Probably the most plausible answer but WHERE do I disable it?

Thanks, I'll give it a try and see if that stops the LED flashing.

Hi
Are you using Vista as your OS, I had Vista on my machine and the LED was flashing 24/7.
I have just upgrade to Windows 7 now the only time the LED flashes is on boot up, shut down or if I open a programs also my machine is so much faster and stable. My hard drive is a sata drive too.
