Blank Screen after Windows Splash Screen

Good morning all.

I have problem with a system I built about 14 months ago. The owner brought it in saying that when booting it goes in to endless reboots.

The system:

Abit IP35P motherboard
Intel C2D E8400 cpu
Seagate Barracuda 250 GB HD
Crucial Ballistix DDR2 6400 2 x 1 GB memory
VisionTek HD 3650
Windows XP Pro 32 bit

What I have done:

Run Memtest86+ for 3 hours result - no errors
Run Seatools diagnostics both short and long tests result - no errors
Run virus scan result - no infections
Did a repair install result - this stopped the endless rebooting

Now, however, once I get past the Windows splash screen all I get is a black screen with a moveable cursor. This is true in both normal and safe mode (in safe mode I also get the white text at top and bottom saying safe mode). I have put a known good graphics card in the system with the same problem occuring and put the card from his system in a known good system without the problem occuring. I have tried various solutions from a Google search ie disconnecting optical drives, loading BIOS default settings,etc to no avail.

Hopefully someone has a solution or a suggestion to solve this. I would rsther not have to format the drive and reinstall the OS if at all possible.

Have you tried disabling any onboard devices like the nic and audio? Have tried chkdsk /r from the Recovery Console? Overclocking? Voltages and temps good?

This could be several things which I would try in this order:

1): Is the CPU Fan running ? ? ?

2): Swap out the CMOS battery

3): Swap out the Power Supply

4): Did you reload or reinstall ALL the motherboard chipset drivers ? ?

If all else fails, the mobo is / has gone bad

Rocketmech - disabled both nic and audio - no change
have not run chkdsk I did run the Seatool long test which reported all sectors ok
no overclocking temps and voltages within spec

bruceb - cpu fan is running swap cmos battery no change swap psu no change
can't reload chipset drivers since there is no diaplay

Train - capacitors checked - no bulging

Well, since it ran Memtest86+ and Seatools for hours, it would seem the problem lies within Windows that the Repair didn't fix. Although a power issue may not show up till under a full load, like loading Windows. Have you run chkdsk ? Any errors found ? .
You might try a Linux Live CD, Ubuntu or Knoppix. If they run fine, then that would isolate it to the hard drive or Windows. You might have to disconnect the hdd for proof. At least you would have a means to backup data if linux runs.
FWIW, my son runs a IP35Pro OC'd since it was released. It's been an excellent board for gaming. I don't know of any known board issues , including bad caps which are all solid.

I would try a better PS as the Antec Earthwatts 500w leaves a bit to be desired.

I have noted other folks run into the same type of problem when they get a bit of age on them.

I would at least swap out the PSU and see what happens. Caps can blow in PSUs also.
