Connecting 2 PC
Is it possible to connect a desktop pc and a laptop using a USB or some other cable, in order that files could be shared. The desktop is running VISTA and the laptop has Win XP.
Thanks

You can use usb or firewire but I don't recommend it. The normal means is to setup a network, using ethernet cable or wifi. If you don't already have a network setup, then you could connect the two together in adhoc using a ethernet crossover cable or use wifi. Most home users setup a home network using a wireless router. This way they can share the same internet connection and share files between all the pc's.

Thumbdrives work great.
And if the data is stuff like graphics they would hate to lose, burn them to a data cd/dvd as backup and then transfer them.
May even want to get a USB harddrive.
Lots of options available, just have to figure out what works best.

They don't need Internet access to use a crossover cable connection. In fact a cheap, regular ethernet cable can be converted into a crossover cable if they can't get one. It's not really that hard.
A tutorial for that can be found here:

(They don't necessarily need all the tools. If they can get by with a steak knife, some electrical tape and spite, then that'll do fine).
All they have to do once they've built or acquired a crossover cable is plug either machine into each other using the cable via ethernet ports, then set up their home network. I'd tell you how to do that but I'm rushed in finishing this message so I'll try later.

Apologies for jumping into a discussion. The question and answers have made me curious. I happened to be reading my cyberguys catalog and noticed the cross over cables, plus other related items (all inexpensive). I am wondering what is the difference between a standard ethernet cable and a crossover. They look the same. Is it in the wiring?
