Vista Service Pack 2
My daughters dell laptop model FKG534J is trying to install vista service pack 2
It installed, told me to reboot, did 3 stages of installation, shutdown, restarted and ran a set of command line instructions, it reached;
!! 0xc0190036 !! 984/45781 (qmgr.dll)
eventually i gave up, hit the off button. on restart it got to the same stage and stopped again

have tried to boot in safe mode, no joy, running diagnosicts now

Is it Vista 32 bit or 64 bit?
Did you try a system restore to a previous point?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358
Did you download the SP2 installer or did you use Windows Updates?
-
its the vista 32 bit version, i used windows update, nothing found in diagnostics,
cannot boot i get that message every time
will check the link now

I do like Midknyte and burn them to a cd and install from that.
That way, whenever I have to re-install, I have the SP's already on hand.
-
have done repair from disk, several times
after finishing it reboots, and stops with the same problem
i never was given the restore point option though
-
can i do that now, as its hung?, have another pc that can burn the disk
-
"have another pc that can burn the disk"
Might be the best way to handle things right now.
Then try a over install of the problems you have now.
Then there is Start up repair.

downloaded from the link
got a *.iso and *.iso.part files
spent ages trying to combine these to make one iso, download 3 different programs trying this
then decided that 'part' may just have a few files missing, so burnt the .iso one to disk
when i booted from it i got 'failed to boot' message
any suggestions......please

Just in case.
How can I write (burn) ISO files to CD or DVD

You don't need to download the .iso version. You can get the regular executable. The link is on the same page.

Plus the .iso has junk you may not want in it.
-
so do make a bootable cd and add that file?, sounds right

Why would you make a bootable cd? If anything, you could slipstream the service pack onto a Vista SP1 DVD. Unlike other SPs, the Vista SPs are NOT cumulative.
