    Ralink vs Realtek

I have one of each, usb wireless network adapters, & the ralink adapter gets significantly less signal. On the same antenna etc. I go from 3-4 bars in windows xp with the realtek as opposed to 1 bar with the ralink. Is that common with these adapters or is the ralink adapter faulty?

Ralink makes few chipsets, some of them are very good, some so so, it depends what is specifically yours.

    What same Antenna means?

I'm using the same 5db antenna & swapping the usb wireless adapters.

The ralink is a rt2870 & the realtek is a rtl8187. I'm getting significantly better signal with the realtek adapter. The ralink works well & I like it, perhaps better overall, or would, if it wasn't for the signal strength.
This is the adapter with the realtek chip, from newegg,

this adapter has the ralink chip

On a side note, I notice several vendors selling products with realtek chipsets, touting their 500mw power at around $50. The adapter from newegg for $20 plus shipping is showing 500mw in device manager. I think the same chip can be had for around $15 free shipping on ebay. Of course newegg always rocks, & ebay sometimes not so much.
anyway, opinions welcome. Just sharing what I found. It was a pretty good test for them as the distance is around 1200 ft. through a thin row of trees.

By the way, I had a used antenna & cut the end off to put on the right fitting. Don't buy one of those expecting to screw it right on without mod.
