l believe the first, the very first US. Geo map ever produced was done by R.B. Marshall at the Little Big Horn Battlefield in 1891 . He was an interesting guy and is the reason that California is the California that exists today. He spent 25 years surveying that states water resources, providing the data and knowledge which enabled the system of dams and reservoirs which water the entire region. A kinda Marshal water plan. Possibly the greatest wealth generating project ever undertaken.

There is a view, a modern opinion, that the mega project - the huge engineering schemes are the past, and modern progress will come from light and small and...... quick. That is a part of the story of our advance into the 21st Century, it also is the story of modern finance, short termism gone insane - they will not lay down tracks for the future and in fact are so obsessed with instant profit that they (profits) are actually manufactured yesterday. That is what is going on, profit is being manufactured as though there is a production line whizzing away............ one little problem with this dream scene though, is that the profits are monetary, they are of finance and the monetary economy and those making those paper profits have forgotten that when they actually want to turn that profit into cash in hand - it comes from the real economy.

The USA has grasped the importance at last, of the gross property market valuation in its economic equation. Home equity was destroyed by the GAAP efforts to regulate derivatives. That should not have happened, it was an error in market practice. Sit and think it through and you will realise that Ferengi are at play, taking over markets. Considerable effort in the US is now being thrown at the problem but there is a very much easier way to sort it out and take back control of the economy - sleight of hand occured by forcing revaluation upon the entire stock of underlying homes..... 80 odd million properties. The destruction of value, read collateral was the single greatest destruction of wealth in human history.

Which end does the horse go? -
This is a puzzle, not a dig. It is subtle.

October 28, 2009 - - Year-on-year US house prices declined more than 10 per cent.
This was taken as a positive — August was the seventh consecutive month with
improved annual rate of decline. US house prices are now at autumn 2003 levels.

That is the only GAAP that matters. Watch it close or chasm.
It will foretell the future.
