Western Digital - grateful + sharp
when you let your drive be designed, could you pls tell the producer to file away the edges of the top-plate. its sharp like a knive! especially important for those crazy people like me who are changing the drives often, having their drives outside the case. i am hesitating filing it myself-maybe after 3 years when your grateful warrenty is over.

This message will never get to anyone at Western Digital.
Why do you change your drives often? Do you have hardware failures?

generous not grateful

i have multiple drives (in a open pc) because:
a) i have dual-drives(120 and 160 for backup), additional 160/2 because i didnt have 160/8 yet. also to use this third one as a data-backup.
the last one, originally the first is running quicker than the others.
b)when doing backups with identical drive-types AND ide-raid one has to be very cautious not to mix the two drives. ide 4-maindrive-is listed at second position. cd-backup of systempartition once helped me reconstruct systempartition.
c) if using additional swapdrive(ide-3) in ide-raid temporary backupdrive must be set to slave otherwise swapdrive will not be loaded.

Install a ATA 133 PCI card and have 4 more ide devices.
The hdds on the card show up as SCSI devices.
ST316002 1A SCSI Disk Device
ST316002 1A SCSI Disk Device
ST316002 3A SCSI Disk Device
ST3300831A
WDC WD25 00JB-00EVA0 SCSI Disk Device
That will add up to 1.2 TB of hdds.
I use a Promise ATA 133 PCI card normally.
Sure saves on the self sacrifices.

ide on sata-controller
i have two additional sata-controllers beside ide1 to ide 4(raid).
how about sata/ide-converter to use ide-drives? the one from fibrionic supports more than 137gb.
it would atleast be quicker than external usb-sata-box. MB cannot profit from sataII-speed.
-
That might work out fine. But can you plug in more than 3 hdds one way or another?
-
ide-raid
ide4(master)- ide3(swapdrive)
additional: ide-1(temporary backupdrive)
sata-ide-converter( 1 drive)
i cannot add a second converter since sata-slot is parallel. only one converter-plate is possible due to orientation of slots
its only 25 chf(20 usd).

(1) How about using the proper equipment for the task - (hot) swap drive bays?
(2) As for connecting lots of drives: Use SATA. Four- or eight-link controllers are inexpensive, and if you buy a PCI-X or PCI-Express type, they'll also be way faster than IDE from legacy PCI.

Maybe time to think about building a second computer with the idea of getting a motherboard that is better designed for what you want to do.
What I am using in this old antique with a 2500 Barton.

I have a identacal computer that is setup as a file server for backup. Yes they are networked.

.....not sure this will seem smart to all of the experts here but what I do is have a SATA drive as my main HD (1) and a SATA DVD lightscribe burner (2) on my SATA 1 and 2 ...then I have 3 EIDE keyed removable bays that can be booted to in the bios post (F8)...I have a basic XP install on one EIDE drive (first full install) that I update all the AV - Firewalls- OS and such about every month......another that I image my main system state to (also about monthly)....another that I keep all of my program setups and important stuff to....that also gets backed up to yet another EIDE removable drive,,,,,and I have 2 USB drives that I tend to file things to (that have thier own power on / off switches) untill I decide if I want to commit them to my removable (and usualy removed) drives.....then there's the stacks of CD's and DVD's......I think I'm kind of OCD....lol............it may take a bit of searching but I can usualy find anything I've ever had.....I still have Netscape CD's!!
....oh well...other than my wife B****ing about all the space my "junk" takes up it works for me........

It is considered poor manners to hijack another users thread.
Please repost this in a separate thread that you start.

....I did not mean to hijack....I was just stating how I swap drives around and why.....
sorry if I offended anyone....

sorry friends. i started this thread with a mistake(gratious not grateful) and it could end in a real confusion. we must avoid this.
1. i wanted to accuse WD to offer us drives with razorsharp edges-on the other hand they are
2. generous with their 3 years warrenty.
3. then i started talking about my drives-setup and asked questions.
can you tell me how i can transfer all the evident answers to a new thread?
thank you very much
