    Shutdown and logout issues

I have 2 accounts on my system. Every now and again, when i either go to shutdown/reboot the system or i logout of an account, it will go to just a black screen and nothing will happen and i have to hard reboot. Any ideas? Windows XP professional SP3.

Check your event log and see if there are any irregularities. Usually that's the sign of an application hanging at shutdown, at least from my experience. Did you install anything new about the time your computer started doing this?

Try disabling one app at a time in the Registry Editor and then close down, see if you can isolate the offender.

If the profiles are not closing out completely, the UPH patch might help.

ive tried all your suggestions and the problem still persists. A co-worker of mine said it could be due to problems with driver sharing. Is there any other thoughts on what could cause this issue?

Are you overclocking that system? did you try setting it back to stock?

I've never heard of a "driver sharing" problem. It could be a background process that is hanging.

I have never heard of driver sharing either. They may mean IRQ sharing which is NOT a problem since Windows 200 came out in late 1999.

There are several registry keys which I always change that speeds up the shut down process:
