Vista Ultimate upgrade sp1 ?
Hi ... I'm using XP pro now and I am happy with this OS , it does everything I need for now . My question is I see Vista upgrade is so cheap now and I am thinking of getting it . I have the specs for it but I am curious to know if it will be a good move or not ? Is there any problems with the Upgrade version ? It comes with sp1 . Thanks

Mod w/ an attitude
Does it support all your hardware?
Does it support all of your software apps?
It may or it may not.

My question would be do you need to upgrade? If you are happy with XP and it does all you need, I would not bother. TO me there is nothing in Vista that makes it a "must have". Vista is still slower than XP and still a little buggy, though this can be related to non- Microsoft software and drivers also.
You can pretty much bet that the price will not be going up in the future. I'd wait until you absolutely have to.

And make sure your computer can handle Vista, then check out what Sterling_Aug posted.

True enough , I don't really need it . I just thought because of the price ( its on sale ) I should grab it before its over .

I have Ultimate in 64 bit and wouldn't buy anything else now. I have Vista Home Premium 64 (X 2) and XP64. If you are running a 64 bit system with a 32 bit version of XP. Then I think it to be a good choice. I have several with 32 bit XP and it is okay and will be for a good while. 64 bit is the future whether the diehards like it or not.

No the upgrade is fine, if you buy a fresh copy from some e-tailer it will likely be on the DVD....it is a DVD, not CD

I have Vista Ultimate, but it was a gift. I waited a year before making the switch. I'm still not completely won over. But then again, mine is the 32 bit version. So I'm not sure how much difference there is in the 64. But I miss XP, I may go back. Only trouble I had was getting my laser printer to work. Cuz HP didn't make drivers, but it took researching and finding it way to make it work.

I have read quite a few Vista posts, most prefer the 64 Bit if their system is capable. Most of the OEMs are still pushing 32 bit. I have Five 64 bit OS and like Ultimate 64 best, XP64 second, Vista Home Premium 64 third, Unbuntu OK...Last

I just put "Vista Ultimate 64" or "Vista 64 Ultimate" The first one worked better, I think. Or just look at the Egg

Ahh, okay. Thanx, I should have known better....duh!
So what's the difference between 32 bit and 64?

Well you can use your 32 bit programs and apps on 64 bit and the 64 bit programs and apps. There are more and more 64 bit programs which do more than 32 bit. XP64 is noticeably snappier and lively, I cannot compare Vista as 64 bit is all I own....and all I will buy.

On the technical side the big difference is 64 has the ability to use memory above the ~~3.x gig wall that 32 hits. It's nice in that if you do have 64, and a native 64 bit program and say 8 gigs of memory installed, you can usually use all of it before needing to use the swap file. Makes for a much faster machine in memory intensive applications.
I personally have both 64 and 32 bit versions for XP and Vista installed. The only time I really notice any difference in performance is working with memory intensive files/applications. Normal apps seem to run about the same.
Also I think the problems with drivers and software compatability that we experienced with XP64 when it first came out have been pretty much addressed and both XP and Viista 64 are fairly close to their 32 bit brothers in useability. The only problem I have with the 64's is XP and UT3. It just won't install or run properly.
If I had to choose only one os, I would probably choose Vista 64. At least that way I would be more likely future proof. But you should google your usual app's and V64 to make sure there are now major issues out there.
