Hooya!
When has anything along the lines of security, and more important.., total security ben put out by those at MS? Of course, from day one, we have had to use our personal choices in much better protection. Right now i use all of what Jak laid out plus CS, because it works..
On top of that, I would say my computer is running just about the best its ever run, and i know that is because of these programs and esp. CS resident shield, and other. Also, if not for you mods and whomever,( you know who you are ), i would be hassling all the time with this. Thks!.

Ditto on that, I disabled at as well. It wasn't doing **** for me, I'm now using Sypbot and CounterSpy with great results. Defender was a big disappointment, and Microsoft keeps saying how great it is??

To be perfectly honest (this is where the security buffs get all upset with me) i do not have any sort of resident background scanning protection of any sort for AV or Spyware. By manually scanning downloaded files as they are downloaded and running regular full system scans im not missing any issues while not losing system performance to background scanning agents.

Oh, I'm upset now! Hehe...
Really, Jakk, you have no protection from network worms or viruses embedded in web pages. I've run into a few of the latter.
Risky bizness...

That's why I like to filter web pages with The Proxomitron.

I agree with BPB on that one.. comeon Jak.., its only a matter of time before somethng happens... In the past i had been ever so lucky, thinking i didn't need those things, then Wham!.. It happens!. Even with MS protection, email toolbar phising protection and all that, in todays world we can all get by passed at some time or another.
Often i still fail to check on what i download, but its nice i have something that pops up and warns me and checks these things for me. Yeah.., its sometimes a pain, and even if it uses a bit of resource, i feel safer and I am. LOL

I think windows defender does nothing but take up system resources by downloading updates and running scans while finding absolutely nada.
It's like a software whirligig......it keeps your eyes busy while it achieves nothing.
Most people think,
Great God will come from the skies,
Take away everything
And make everybody feel high.
But if you know what life is worth,
You will look for yours on earth:
And now you see the light,
You stand up for your rights. jah!

okay..I need a tip
I've never trusted Mr. Gates or Microsoft, and I realize that there are anti-spyware malware or whatever programs out there....
but on "Ma's system" (my significant other here)
she's running Mozilla FireFox, not even sure if she has the newest upgrade...
my question is....
why run Windows defender in the back ground if you are not using IE7?
It's probably a stupid question and I tried to pay attention to the comments
she runs and updates Norton Internet Security 2008 now and every year because she does her banking and such online...
so she has the included spyware protection and phishing filters that are there within the program....
and also has Security Task Manager and Spy Protector which includes a keyboard and program monitor blocker
give me any tips you can offer...
does she really NEED Windows Defender if she has Norton?
Thanks in advance

Sounds good to me. i would guess if she is using the whole of the 'Norton Security suite, plus a phising filter and spyware blocker to boot, then that seems pretty well protected. i would say 'no' on 'Defender'.
Its not so much that i love to diss MS,afterall we all are using thier software for our OS,and alot of inbedded included in the whole package, but its quite obvious to me, that MS always is trying ot sell ya something, whether they feel deep down inside, it trully works or not. Look at how they marketed 'Vista'. They lied through thier teeth, adn even today with mariad of fixes for this and that, i find nothng but loads of uses who have nothng but problems. Soo, why didn't they do some more testing or at least put out a product that works as advertised. Constantly misleading the public is making Mr. gates seem like nothing more then a greedy fool. of course, he like any hed of company or enterprise have his lackies to blame or trust, an i couldn;t tell ya if he trully has his own imprint on anything or not.
Also, I cannot for the life of me, understand that if its MS, they should have the leading edge people working for them, one would think. Obvioulsy not, because most of the good if not best software is put out by outside vendors. ??? Why is that? Most of MS products are buggy or need immed. patches right out of the gate.
In another manner of answer, I would say that time tells the tale. If she doesn't have many or no major issues or problems with security then obvioulsy what she is using works.
Me.., i'm using 'Bitdefender Personal', SuperAntispyware, and do have the windows firewall on, if nothing more then to appease those darn security messages and emblems that popup in ones startup menu. LOL

Norton's "solutions" are not 100% effective, but useing Firefox and running Norton is as close to full protection as you can get.

Thanks for all the input...
Ma has little problem with her Symantec...I was more discouraged that with their Intenet Security and System Works 2008...they decided to dis-include their install manager and such and put it in another program utility that you have to purchase seperately. They probably get their lessons from Mr gates, but business is profits and profits make the world go round...

I may be talking kind'r garden stuff...but go to "START/CONTROL PANEL/SECURITY CENTER" and in the left hand pane, click on "CHANGE THE WAY WINDOWS SECURITY ALERTS ME"...then just uncheck at your will and wisdom depending on what you wish to do...it doesn't affect AUTOMATIC UPDATES or anything for staying up to date and with what I have for anti-virus and firewall...I really don't need Mcirosoft giving me running tips in those areas...

with my query, if she isn't using IE7 for a browser...does she really need Windows Defender running in the background...or SilverLight
I've cleaned her up through msconfig as much as I can....and still for an Asus A8V-MX with an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and twin SATA's...she's running turtle sluggish and using Firefox...I have almost a twin to hers and it dances in the sprinkler at midnight compared to hers...
she is suggesting on going through GEEKS and doing a HIJACK THIS run and I am scared she will do it herself and oh BOY, the reprocutions and such if I have to fix things....thank GOD I got an early ACRONIS on the system but she will lose a bunch of info since she doesn't back things up, up to date in other words...
I did a TASK MANAGER and ran across these in process information....now I haven't checked everything out but found programs in CONTROL PANEL that have no uninstall and as I said, she doesn't use the ASHAMPOO UNINSTALLER PLATINUM 2 on everything till I turned it onto auto
cidaemon.exe

BRS BRM most likely brother printer/multi functional
why does it run in the back ground if not operating
how to stop

webfldrsXP ...found nothing in reference online....what the heck is this????
windows presentation foundation ...SILVERLIGHT? does she need it?

end of rattle and roll...
personally from your tips and advice...I am goign to try OPERA and SOPHIA on my 'working on other's computer' and check it all out...
but for now...can you bare with my long windedness and give me ANY advice so that the end run gets her back to smooth running and I can get her slugs out of her computer
thanks in advance

As suggested.. have her download the 'free trial' edition of 'CounterSpy V2'. Have that update and run a full system scan in 'safemode'. I would bet that something gets caught, fixed, and in the process, you and her will learn some things.
Also, if you have not done so already, then run the 'chkdsk' utility dos command for checking your disk for errors, or OS corruption. Just type that in the run command menu/start menu bar. LOL

Thanks everyone...
After 'hours' ofcleaning through her system, I was able to get it running far better. The CounterSpy did little but to find some cookies, but I like the program and am using it on my own computer now. I found more in program conflicts and background programs running than anything else. There was too much giving her trouble by running Adaware, Windows Defender, Silverlight and all that crud along with Norton Internet Security 2008 and just giving her conflicts and such. After running through system processes in Control panel, Administrative Services and going through with a neat little program from Microsoft now called Windows Installer CleanUp Utility...
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=290301
after identifying the programs and deleting them, it sped things up remarkably well and I also stuck a gig of memory in there too, after I was sure my janitorial measures worked sufficiently.
Thansk for all the help everyone
