To Partition or Not To Partition?

The 1 TB WD HDD just arrived, so now i'm proceeding to install it.

But i was wondering if it will perform better as 1 huge partition, or several splits?

It's going to be storing mostly TiVO stuff, MP3, videos, photos, etc.

This drive is going to be dedicated mainly for multimedia stuff, TiVO recording average is 700 MB to 2.5 GB depending on the length of the show and quality.

That's the nice thing of have the ATI All in Wonder

anyways, so i just want to hear some opinions

I know by personal experience 1 huge partition, usually performs rather sluggish slow.

But not sure how many partition will work best for a monster size HDD like this one LOL

    You need another option:

1 partition of 50 GBytes and the rest in a second partition for data.

    WOW! we think alike LOL

i couldn't wait for the replies, so i went ahead and did just exactly that already.

i got a wooping 900 GB in partition 2, and anything left over in partition 1, for another OS install (Linux, Vista, whatever.....)

1 TB is not really 1 TB, if you count by bytes yeah it is exactly 1024 TB
but if you count by Windows method then it's more like 932 GB

theoretically there shouldn't be a speed difference. it's the same disk, any way you cut it.

1 30GB for the OS itself

1 40GB or so for your Applications

Split what is left into 2 or 3 partitions

1 for your Music and Photos

1 Dedicated to the TIVO function .. I would install that program
here as well, if it will allow it.

1 for the recorded shows you want to keep

I'd just go for one partition. I don't like having loads of partitions just to break up a drive.

However, I'm still trying to figure out what I'd do with a 1Tb drive too.

Defragging a 1TB drive will require a second PC for productivity.

50GB OS and app partition and the rest for data - in folders. Defragging the OS is critical for performance.

I agree with 50GB for OS and apps and the rest data.

Had C:\ get scrambled a few times but did not lose any data on the Extended parts. 250,000 volt transmission lines hit together, sure caused weird things to happen.
