"Emulate" an OS inside of one?
I've tried looking into this, but I cant seem to find an answer. Basically, want I want to do is run 2 instances of an MMORPG, so that I can have 2 characters logged in and can trade stuff from one char to another etc. I don't have a 2nd computer, and no I can't buy a laptop lol. The game though doesn't let you run 2 clients one one machine. So, is there a way I can emulate some kind of 2nd OS inside my current windows XP and run one instance of the game in my real windows and one in the emulated one?

It's been mentioned a few times in this forum. Search for VM or virtual machines.
You can download Virtual PC for free. You will need a license for each OS you install.

Yeah I heard about VMs, but they all looked complex, and only 30 day trial. Thanks mid I'll try that one it looks promising.

Ok well I got farther with this one than any other.......but................. I can't make it really do anything lol. I don't know how to load a virtual OS or whatever... Just gets stuck at a MAC address DOS screen.

did you install xp onto the new VM? it won't just boot to windows. you have to do a clean install, like it was a new system.

At what point does it get stuck - installing or actually starting the OS? Take your time and be clear.
As far as networking the new OS goes, choose NAT. Don't forget to install the Virtual PC tools after you set up the VM.

Good luck getting a game running in a VM, assuming you are using VirtualPC or VMware, and are trying to run a game like WoW. Your video card isn't recognized in the virtual machine, basically, so running anything 3D you can forget about.
Of course, if you are playing some text-based MMORPG, more power to ya.

Thanks guys. Rofl I knew there had to be some kind of installation step I had to do. Figured it was too easy if it would just run. Is it actually going to install another copy of XP to my physical drive or does it somehow virtually install it?
MJC, you sure about this? I've heard this has been done (but of course people DO lie lol). If so, that stinks...

Sorry Bill I didn't answer your question... It got stuck just when I tried starting the VM. Stuck on a DOS looking screen with a MAC address displayed and a little spinning slash. But I think that's because I have no OS installed to the VM lol.

The VM is like having another computer inside your existing OS. You will have to do a full install of the OS. You must own a second windows license, one for your regular system and one for the VM.
