    p35 or 680i ???

Planning a new build to start in a month or so. been doing some reading on mobo's and not sure which chipset to go with, so i thought i would see what everyone thought.

My plans for this pc is mainly gaming and wife does some photo edditing.

I have been thinking about going with a q6600 for the cpu, 8800gts for vid, sli would only be for future use if at all. Not sure yet on what speed of mem or brand. Oc'ing definately, and plan to use existing water cooling since its compatable with new build.

    thanks for any advice

im running a Q6600 on a P35 chipset with watercooling on an abit board, the IP35 Pro. Im getting 3.6 Ghz easy with this setup, ive also owned a 680i board as well. Both are solid and good choices. But like mentioned in another thread, you would be better off and would be cheaper to get the 8800GT as its outperforming the GTS and is about the same as and maybe a little cheaper than the GTS.

Thanks for the heads-up on the 8800gt instead of the gts i didnt know that. I have yet to own an Abit boards, most of my experience has been with Asus and Epox as far as oc'ing.

How do you like the board in your system spec's?

Do you think i would see much differance from my current spec's??

my board is rock solid, and yes, you will notice a huge jump in performance, like you wouldnt believe.

    Sorry so long to reply

I thought it might be a pretty big jump in performance. Im partial to Asus and Epox boards, since i have very good luck with performance and reliabilty. I've always been one to believe you start with a solid foundation and cant go wrong.

That doesnt mean that i wont try a different board, if the reviews and board seems solid and made with quality parts.

Im leaning towards the P35 boards since sli isnt a big concern, just havnt made my mind up on a perticular board.

    thanks again

from what ive come to understand, nVidia cards seem to perform better on the P35 chipset than the nForce chipsets.

Same here from what i have read. Would be nice to see 5 P35 boards and 5 680i boards with same test benches. Im sure the Sli config. would win, but curious to see how they compair on single cards.

Did you have any problems with the Sata ports on your board? I have read reviews where ports 1 and 2 are not able to use with the 8800 gtx. Dont know if the gt version is shorter than the gtx.

Are u using Air cooling or Water on your set-up?

you are correct with the sata ports, BUT, the Abit board im using, they have the sata ports on the side of the board like they do some of their IDE connectors.

    Thanks for the links

There boards have come a long way in the past couple of years, very impressive.
I like the layout of the board.

Apparently you didnt have much trouble with the Vdroop on the board while oc'ing the q6600.

Seems the more i read on the p35 boards the closer they are in compairison, doesnt seem like any one board really walks away with it all. Unlike other chipsets in the past.

Im really liking the p35 concept at least for my needs.
