Getting Drivers to Install on Netgear Wireless Adapter
Hi
I have moved house & gone for wireless connections rather than running the ethernet cables over the new house. I have 3 PC's on the network and a netgear wireless router so I bought 3x WG311T PCI wireless adapters as it claimed i could get 108mbs.
I have 1 PC working after advice from sterling re the connection (downloading the latest drivers solved that problem. However I cannot get the same drivers to install on the 2nd PC. The instructions are install software, shut down, install adapter, restart, continue installation. At the continue installation stage I get 'Cannot Install Drivers' 'Data Invalid' or something like that. Exactly the same setup.exe installed successfully on the other PC. I have tried 2 different adapters in all 3 PCI slots with the same result, re-running the setup program after each failure to remove the software and removing the adapter, running ccleaner and jv16 to search for issues each time it fails.
The PC is running XP Home with a P4 2.5Ghz CPU & 1 gig of ram and plenty of hard disc space
Any suggestions would be most helpful
Many Thanks
Kev

JUst an update
I have now tried netgear drivers ver 3.3, 4.3, 4.4 & 5.0
I have also tried Atheros drivers as their card has same chipset
I also read solution which involves regedit & permissions (give full control)
The card has been in & out at least 40 times but still no luck
Think I may have to drill the walls and run ethernet cables for this PC (admit defeat). However I am half expecting that when I put the ethernet card back in I get the same error.
PS There was one link on google that stated that this adpter does not like MSI mobo's, guess what I have!!
thanks Kev

Mod w/ an attitude
Time to buy a new NIC then. Save the headaches and get a new wireless card (different brand). I would try a D-Link.

I would but as trying to install my USB wireless dongle get the same result, I wonder if its the PC not the card
I dont know if it means anything but I read on google that it works if you boot ib safe mode. So I tried and it gets to the screen with all the user names and re-starts, in normal mode it will boot
thanks

Any yellow question marks in Unknown Device Manager? Try re-installing the mother board drivers.

Try renaming the i386 folder in C:\Windows\Driver Cache\ before installing that driver.

I have now updated the mobo drivers but no luck
Also tried renaming the i386 folder again no luck
Also restored system to earlier date but it did not make it work
I have tried installing a few different pci / usb devices but i get this error every time
I have tried the xp permission reg edit but it did not work
i am now thinking that the problem is not the wireless adapter but any device i try & install
many thanks

Time to do a wipe and fresh install then.

Hi
I have the xp home disk that came with the machine in 2002 but i have;
changed the hard drive from 40gb to 400gb
changed the graphics card from mx440 to 9800 pro
added creative sound card
added a gig of ram
so i don't know if it will check & say this is a different system
also i have 20gb of mp3's. downloaded & installed many programs / utilities / updates and set them up how i like them. It will take me weeks to get everything back where it is now (if i ever could)
Is there anything short of a wipe that i could do maybe a repair
THanks
Kev
