Debian Linux serial mouse does not move around the entire screen

Just installed Debian 2.x on an old laptop --

    Toshiba 660CDT
    80M RAM
    1.3G HDD
    150 MHz CPU

Onboard mouse does not function, so I am using a serial mouse (DB9 plug) instead. It works, and I can move around, but the pointer is not working when I try to click on a button. I have to move the mouse off the button about an inch away, and then it works. Also, I cannot move the mouse to the bottom of the screen or to the very right side of the screen.

I was thinking it may be more of a hardware issue? Not a linux issue? Dont know and I cannot find any threads online about this.....HELP!

It was a driver issue. The mouse resolution was not calibrated.

I hope you installed Ubuntu. It is one of the best Linux distros out now.

    that makes sense....

I havent tried ubuntu, although read about it. I am currently running RH6.0 on this laptop, it works much better than Deb.

But I cant get the sound to work. I did "chmod 777 /dev/mixer /dev/dsp /dev/sg*" and still I cannot bring up the mixing console on KDE. I also noticed that I dont have /etc/pnp.config in the /etc dir....

    Any suggestions on that?

Also, one more question -- my HDD on this thing is only 1.3G, can I make an install with Ubuntu with a total install size of around 100-300Megs with X?

    thanks!!!

I'm sure you could, but why not buy a bigger hard drive. Maybe a 6GB or 8GB laptop drive.

I would be running Puppy Linux on that puppy.

Try running alsaconfig for the sound.

For such an old machine I'd recommend vector linux which is based off slackware designed for old x86 systems. It's very fast but still powerful.
