    Hard Drive Transfer

I need help on how to transfer contents from one drive to another. I needed a new hard drive because my other one is only 80GB and it's an IDE. I just bought a 320GB Maxtor that's SATA based. I need to put everything from my old IDE drive to an SATA one and ditch my old drive. I'm not familiar with hard drive stuff so I need someone's best suggestion on how to do this as painlessly as possible.

    TIA

Does you system support SATA drives?

If yes, then the easiest way to move to the new drive is to start from scratch. It can be a big hassle to replace the HAL when changing a boot drive from IDE to SATA.

Yeah, it does support it. It's a new build with an EVGA 680i mobo. I just kept the old drive from my other computer and now I'm in need of more IDE drives and I only have two IDE connections.

Cloning the drive isn't the issue. It is having the correct drivers for the SATA drive to be bootable. It depends on the specifics of your system. If your system treats a SATA drive as if it is an IDE drive, then you are in great shape. If not, then a clean install is the best solution.

There is also free utilities from every hard drive manufacturer to clone drives. FYI
