Transferring from one drive to another.

Yes... exactly as the title says. I need to know how I can transfer all of my settings from my older 80GB IDE drive to a new 200GB SATA drive. I figure it's time to switch and I need some extra storage space.

    Thanks...

Just settings? What about the Windows Files and Settings Transfer Wizard? I copy my settings to a file in my documents, burn it to a CD, and copy them to my computer using the Wizard if I need to. it works good. If you have a DVD burner on your system, maybe you could transfer your files in the same package as the settings (assuming you have alot of data), unless you took care of that.

you can do an image, but the controllers would be different. you'd have to do at least a repair install of windows.

I suppose... What I was shooting for was an exact copy onto the new drive so I don't have to bother with reinstalling anything. Besides I have no idea where my copy of Windows XP is anyway.

Winows Files and Settings Transfer WIzard

Oh Yeah, some programs won't work if they are copied (files and all) to another system. Especially microsoft ones. Happend to me once when I tried that.

you can use acronis true image. version 7 is free.

since you are going from an ide controller to sata, you would have to do a repair install with your original winxp cd, or preferably a slipstreamed edition with the same service pack that you are running. IE, if you have sp2 running, then repair with a winxp sp2 cd.

if you don't have the original cd, then make sure you copy down your current code. you can still use another cd, but you need your code.

All he needs to do is to load the SATA controller drivers to the current setup, clone the drive, remove the old one and boot up. A repair is not needed usually.

I guess that's true since it's still the same motherboard. It's worth a shot. Even if it doesn't work, you'll be no worse for wear.

This maybe a dumb question, but I can only gain by asking. How?

I have to copy my drive contents alot (long running story)

(I also asked so the other guy didn't have to)

I heard of Ghost some time ago, but I wasn't sure what it was for. Thanks.
