Broken Pin on CPU
Well, my crossed fingers didn't help. A dropped CPU left bent pins, and even with extra special care and a soft touch, I broke one and only one pin on it. Its an AMD 64 3000+ skt 754 and I will try to explain the exact pin location. If you took the CPU and turned it top side up and had the insertion arrow to the upper right hand corner, the broken pin would be the first pin on the right at the top closest to the insertion arrow on the other side, first vertical (not horizontal) row. In other words, the first up n down row on the right, first pin. Now I haven't had the chance yet to power it up since i am still building the system, but any advice from prior problematic survivors would be appreciated. Is it fixable? Most important, will that one tiny pin cause the CPU to fail? I know pin placement and row specific location matter as to the pin's importance so I am hoping for some good hints and advice here. Thanks in advance.

Some CPU's have unused pins from what I hear... You may have gotten lucky, only one way to find out and that is to try it.

Some are ground pins, and you can get away with it, try it.

****! I would hate to lose such a CPU due to misfortune. Good Luck.

You should be able to find a pin out diagram on AMD's web site.

hmmmmmmmmm....
anyone who's a bit more use to navigating AMD's site got a tip on where I can find the PIN out diagram on this? I've been all over AMD's site and am at a loss. I doubt it will help me much if I can't get her to boot and run, but its always good to have the knowledge in the background.
Also...
anyone have a clue on how to repair a broken CPU pin?
I really appreciate all the input folks...
thanks in advance

Just stick it in and find out if it works. Many of the pins are redundant.

Unless you are the Ultra Mega Jesus, the pin cannot be repaired.
Also, if you can, return it to the people you purchased it from and exchange for a new one (or get your money back and get a new one). Say it was broken when you got it.
Or snatch your current rig's psu and test it.

If you still have the pin, a jeweler can most likely reattach it. They is skilled at such things.

Actually any piece of copper wire the right size should work...and yes, pins are soldered on.

I'd say a jeweler should be able to repair it if it doesn't work and you can't take it back.

Just test it. If it breaks, return it.
If a processor is like anything with a missing third prong on a three prong plug, the only worry you should have is a power surge. (Just a guess)
