North Bridge Controller HeatSink Fell off?
I put a new Video Card in My PC today. I was surprised to find the silver heatsink attached to the North Bridge Controller had come off. I have no idea how long it had been that way since I rarely open my PC.
It was attached by some adhesive on the heatsink and it also had 4 clampls it was connected to. 3 of the 4 clamps have come off the the Motherboard and I can't put them back in. How important is this? Can I get by without it? Could I just get another type of two sided tape and stick it back on?
I have a ASUS P4B533 ACPI MB
Thanks,

Mod w/ an attitude
No, do NOT use two sided tape.
I would get thermal epoxy that is designed for the higher temps the chipset will see.

Clean it well, apply some good thermal goo leaving opposite corners clean, (just two )
and apply tiny dabs crazy/superglue
you will be surprised how it will do. That is if thermal epoxy is hard to get for you.
My K7S5A ran for years with the "integrated bridge mod" using superglue.

That's the good stuff ! I have used it a good bit
Here is a good place for cooling items
http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/
I have used them for heat sinks and things for five or six years

Remember this:
Negligible electrical conductivity:
Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive was formulated to conduct heat, not electricity.
NOTE: Even though Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive is specifically engineered for high electrical resistance, it should be keep away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. The cured adhesive is slightly capacitive and could potentially cause
problems if it bridged two close-proximityelectrical paths.
It can and does. Be careful as just a small bit in the wrong place is all it takes. Voice of experience, memory heatsinks on a video card, a little bit crossed a small cap, borked it....and 300$...

I'm up and running again! I'm positive I did everything correct. If I did get anything in the wrong place like mobo57, how soon would I know? Could it take a few days or would something go wrong right away?

For the most part you would know right away. Run some stress tests just to make sure and keep an eye on your NB temps.

Just use it sparingly, wax paper stencil to protect if you are real concerned about misapplication. That is the right stuff to use, we used to mix alitttle AS5 with it to reduce the strength.
