    Excellent idea BPB:

Cell phones, Blackberry hand-helds, other similar devices will cause these kinds of issues.

    Com port changes

I don't have a cell phone. All i've got connected to it is the scanner and printer. I've deleted Q serve but it says something else is using the port. I just can't find out what it is. Not sure where to go now. I reinstalled both AOL and XP formatted but i didn't allow Q serve to set up so maybe it's something else i don't know about. Dont' know where to look for it i'm afriad.
I've got Firewall/AV, and several protection programmes (paid for and free)
As i've deleted the Q serve how do i look for what else is using the port?

Try this little app from M'soft to track down the culprit:

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

You might also try adjusting your firewall settings or just running the one-way Windows version. If you're using a firewall other than Windows, you must turn off the Windows firewall in Security Center.

Why on earth would you save *any* download to the Temp folder when you can choose where to save it? Instead of accepting where it is extracted, change the path to C:\DOCUME~1\Samantha\Desktop. There are four files - one of them is a README.

Okay done that. I've opened it and i get this message:
Extracting file failed. It is probably caused by low memory (low disk for swapping file)or corrupted cabinet file.

The Port Reporter Tool is for logging TCPIP port data , the TCP/UDP ports . Thats not the same as what COM ports are being assigned to devices when Windows loads .

Look for a driver update for the modem .

    I don't have a cell phone...
I've switched to AOL 9.0 and broadband today, but i'm still not able to get online very well, it struggles all the time. I wondered about that DMI problem which it threw up, does anyone know what that is please?
I've checked the firewall and that's okay.

If you have XP, back your files up you need to save in My Documents (or where ever else) To a DVD or another drive, and think back to a time when the computer worked right and do a System Restore. Then delete the modem out of the system or disable it . Then install the broardband.
