Explosion reported at PayPal headquarters
A thick glass window exploded at the four-story San Jose-based PayPal headquarters Tuesday night, a San Jose fire captain said. Investigators believe an explosive device caused a six-by-seven-foot window to shatter, although they only found remnants of what that they think broke the window, Capt. Jose Guerrero said. "Whatever it was, it disintegrated,'' he said.
Some 26 employees of the company owned by eBay at 2211 N. First St. were evacuated as federal agents, a bomb squad and San Jose firefighters and police investigated several 7:31 p.m. 911 calls reporting a blast.
The building's private alarm company first reported a possible explosion according to Guerrero.
The firefighters who first arrived didn't find any obvious signs of a fire, but saw a haze coming from inside the building, he said.
A hazardous materials team went through the building and didn't find a second device, Guerrero said. The damage was limited to the one window and there were no reported injuries, he said.
The make up of the explosive device has not been confirmed, Guerrero said.
