    Consumer Reports Tests Antivirus Programs

    http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/e...oftware_ov.htm

Apparently they created over 5000 viruses themselves in order to test the programs...unfortunately you need to be registered on their site in order to view the results of the tests...anyone?

Well that pretty much invalidates the whole test IMO. Who cares how AV packages fare against non-real-world viruses?

Well, it does tell you which program has the best heuristic abilities.

I have been looking at Kaspersky and Bit Defender. I currently Use Avast. I am not sure If I should upgrade or not. I think Avast is serving me well at the moment. I have not been infected with a virus since installing it. It has detected a few viruses when I have click search links at various places.

    Tough choices.

I didn't believe the results when I first saw this post.

I have read many tests on AV and malware programs and the results are consistent and the testing and methodology for them has be competently carried out, if not under ideal conditions. No test on AVs and malware progs can be.

Here are two links: one from CounterSpy's Head and one from Eric Howes (Security Expert, now employed as Director of Malware Research due to his past expertise)

    CounterSpy rebuke: http://www.sysopt.com/forum/attachme...achmentid=8855

    Eric Howes rebuke: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ihs/...p_20spycar.pdf

Now make your own mind up again based on these rebutals. I agree with them, not CR.

If we are going to improve the members of Sysopt.com's chances of AV and malware detection and removal more care must be taken on the choice of test reports posted and commented on.

As I have mentioned, the best of breed is NOD32 (www.eset.com) and CounterSpy (www.sunbelt-software.com)

The CR methodology is very poor and the results are misleading and should be ignored.

I'm running Eset NOD32 now. fast scanning and low memory usage. the GUI is a little clunky, but you get used to it.

Why hasn't their webpage been updated with a test which is less than 6 months old? Is it really valid to look at November 2005 in light of the past year's increase in virus sophistication?

Likewise, does NOD32 use the Ewido and BitDefender type of kernel security?
