SLI combination w/ same GPU but different memory size

I have a 6800XT with 512MB of memory (this one ) and was wondering (and very much doubting) if the same kind with 256MB of memory (this one ) would work as SLI. Even the 128MB since I know SLI doesn't do anything with the second videocard's memory. Just out to save a little money.

    thanks...

what do you mean it doesn't do anything with the second card's memory? where did you read that?

if you buy a 256mb card, then BOTH cards would act as 256 cards. You'd basically be losing out on 256MB on your original card.

i thought SLI only combined GPUs and had nothing to do with memory.

In SLI the video cards have to be IDENTICAL. If they are not, SLI will not work. That goes for the amount memory each card has too.

I've heard that the GPUs have to be the same, but the memory is limited to the lower of the two cards. it might only be with the 80 series drivers, though.

in either case, memory from both cards is used.
