    Drives not Recognized

I installed a pirated version of Nero and afterwards neither of my drives are recognized. Yes, I know pirated software is wrong. But I used it, and I picked up some viruses and worms. My bad and my own fauly. have a CDRW and a DVDRW, both Lite-on, and neither are recognized in "My Computer" or any program. The device manager see's them but says they are not functioning. I tried letting XP set them up through "add new hardware" in the control panel but it doesn't work. I saw somewhere online that I need to do some registry editing. I ran AVG virus and found a couple worms. I cleaned that up. I also ran my Ad-aware and cleaned out all spyware. What do I do? I really want to format but need to back stuff up first, but need access to my drives. Help me guys.

    Windows XP SP2
    Athlon XP 1800@ 360 FSB 2.1GHZ
    1GB DR333 @ 360
    Ti4200 64mb
    Biostar M7CND Pro
    Liteon 52x CDRW
    Liteon 16x DVDRW

Downloaded it, installed it, restarted the computer, nothing changed. Any other ideas I can try out?

Scan again for viruses as they may have been backed up.

    1. Yep. And do a free on-line scan with HouseCall, Kasperski or both.

Just using restore won't always work if the worms, trojans and viruses saved in that restore point - you're lucky it worked, and remember we're not here to help you with pirated software. If it happens again may close the thread and you'll be on your own

I went thru a brief phase of downloading some proggies, which I have long been against, but....well, I just squashed it for a while. But then smacked myself around and dumped it all. Just not right.
