    AM2

Has anyone got their hands on the AM2 range of processors/mobo's yet? I noticed they were released in the last week or so and have been putting off upgrading until after the first wave fo these so any personal opinions yet?

Nothing is for sale yet. They were only announced - not released.

Well, several retailers over here in the UK are announcing stock and have been for 2 days. Sorry to contradict you Bill, but I was just wondering.

I can only find 5 motherboards with an AM2 socket here.

It's gonna take a while to sort this out. I wouldn't buy so much as a heatsink until someone reviews a product. Would you?

There is very minimal performance gain, if any. You'd also have to get DDR2. I'd wait at least until Conroe comes out.

AMD didn't move to AM2 for performance reasons. They did it because the DDR market is drying up and DDR2 has more headroom. It's the best option for the future, but not necessarily for the present. I'd wait for the K8L series processors before bothering to move to DDR2 on AMD.

No, not at all Bill, and I won't be doing so until at least the start of next year anyway as I have just committed to buying a new house.

I have read several bits that say performance won't jump initially, it'll be the same for a bit. But, AMD are saying that they're committing to the AM2 platform for a considerable period of time, and that performance, power and heat dissipation benefits will really be seen in the coming years. It also should hopefully mean that getting on the bandwagon at any stage should give adopters as much future proofing as you can ever get in computing.

    AM2 is getting us:

    * Same performance using less power
    * Current memory technology
    * Memory bandwidth headroom for future, faster processors
    * Infrastructure headroom for future, faster processors

there are some for sale in my local area, but i'm not very impressed with it after reading all those reviews

seems like it's best to stay with what you have now, unless you are going for the TOP end

meaning at least $2000 only on CPU + RAM + mobo
    i7-3970X, Corsair H80, 32GB G.SKILL, ASUS RAMPAGE4 Formula, VG278H(3x27")+3D Vision2, EVGA GTX 690(x2), OCZ ZX1250W, 256GB Vertex4(x2), Seagate 3TB(x5), Antec LanBoyAir, Logitech G510, G600, Z560THX, T.Flight Hotas, PZ35, Sennheiser PC163D, TrackIR5

The onward progression kills me as I just purchased an FX60 and along come AM2's.
    Most people think,
Great God will come from the skies,
    Take away everything
    And make everybody feel high.
But if you know what life is worth,
You will look for yours on earth:
And now you see the light,
You stand up for your rights. jah!
