    Email question

I am thinking of switching to Optimum On Line internet thru Cablevision
However, I know for a fact that they block Port 25 SMTP (it's on their web site)

    I use the following emails:

    Netscape.net
    Yahoo.com
    Msn.com
    Gmail.com

I use them only from a Web Screen .. such as mail.yahoo.com ... etc

I do not use email forwarding or try to access them thru Outlook or Outlook Express .... my question is wether or not I will experience any problems with
Outgoing Emails if Port 25 is blocked ?

If so, how can this be overcome ?

    Thanks

Doing email via the internet/web mail shouldn't be affected.

Even if they are blocking port 25, they have to be using another port.....

They are most liekly blocking port 25 inbound, not out bound. They just don't want you hosting an e-mail server.

actually most isp's will block port 25 Outbound as that
is what it is used for .. incoming mail comes in on another port

Bruce, I hate to argue on something like this, but an e-mail server (Exchange, Sendmail...) receives its mail on port 25. It also sends its mail on port 25. They wouldn't block port 25 outbound, because then you couldn't use any e-mail programs to send mail. They will block it inbound though so you don't setup an Exchange server or the likes.

Web-mail, correct. I was just trying to explain why the ISP might block port 25.

They do it so that you don't use their network to send spam remotely through their network. You can send SMTP through their network only if you are sending from one of their IP addesses with one of their user ids.

So that means my mail accounts will still work ok from a browser window, but
they might not from something like Outlook or Outlook Express

That is possible, but if you wanted to use one of those programs, I would try it out first just to see.

I personally do not use them as I will not pay Yahoo a fee to forward the emails,
most of which are junk anyway .. However, my brother uses the same internet
line that I do & he does like to use Outlook ... I have read somewhere that if port
25 is blocked to try using Port 587 ... we will see when & if we switch over to
Optimum Online .. Gmail does not charge for forwarding emails .. not sure about
the free msn mail account or the free netscape.net mail accounts

MSN and Hotmail use the http protocol and only MSN Premium Services will work with Outlook or OE . MSN made allowances for older free Hotmail accounts who used OE or Outlook a few years ago , but that no longer applies to new accounts .

    Netscape ? No

    Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.3.isp.netscape.com (port 110)
Outgoing Mail Server - smtp.isp.netscape.com (port 25, using a secure SSL connection)

    Google's Gmail? should

Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop.gmail.com (SSL enabled, port 995)
Outgoing Mail Server - use the SMTP mail server address provided by your local ISP
